Pet Microchip

Your pet must be identified with a 15-digit ISO 11784/11785 compliant pet microchip, prior to rabies vaccination.

The microchip should be implanted by your veterinarian, veterinary hospital or trained nurse. You should receive documentation as to the manufacturer of the microchip and instructions how to register your pet's information in the manufacturer database.

Vaccinations

Unless your dog or cat is entering from a country that American Samoa considers as rabies free. (see item #6 for list of countries), your dog will need proof of a current rabies vaccination. Dogs that have never been vaccinated against rabies must be vaccinated between 6 months and one year prior to arrival. Other routine vaccinations are also required.

Rabies Titer Test

At least 30 days after rabies vaccination, your veterinarian must administer a rabies titer test. Samples must be sent to approved laboratories. The test is valid for 36 months.

Screwworm Inspection - Dogs Only

Before your dog can enter American Samoa from the certain countries, it must be inspected for certain screwworms between one and five days prior to entering the United States. Your veterinarian must verify that your pet has been inspected for screwworm on the health certificate, and the results are negative.

Import Permit

Your cat or dog must have a permit to import from the Department of Health. All necessary documentation must be submitted to receive a permit number.

Internal and External Parasite Treatments

All dogs should be treated by a licensed veterinarian for internal parasites. Cats and dogs must be treated for external parasites prior to entry. All treatments should be noted on the health certificate.

Inspections must be made for skin disorders, fleas, ticks, etc.

Pet Health Certificate

A licensed veterinarian in the origination country must issue a pet health certificate for American Samoa. This certificate should be in English or be accompanied by a version translated in English. It should identify the animal, the dates of vaccination, the manufacturer and the expiration date of the rabies vaccine and all other vaccinations necessary to enter American Samoa.

This certificate must be issued and/or endorsed by a government veterinarian representing the agency in the origination country that is responsible for the import and export of live animals.

Entering American Samoa by Air

Pets entering American Samoa must enter as air cargo via Pago Pago International Airport. All domestic dogs and cats must be free of evidence of disease communicable to humans when examined at the port of entry. If your dog or cat is not in apparent good health, further examination by a licensed veterinarian may be required at your expense.

Puppies and Kittens

Puppies and kittens entering American Samoa must conform to all regulations listed here.

Banned Breeds

American Samoa will not permit the import of Pit Bull breeds or their crosses. American Bull Terriers are also banned from entry.
