A beautiful and shorter drive is called the East Tennessee Crossing. This 84 mile drive which was once called the Dixie highway stretches from the Cumberland Gap to the Cherokee National Forest. Originally it was the path of the Cherokee warriors. The highway wanders through a land of forested hills and lakes. Don’t be surprised if you run across a moonshine still along the way. Nashville is the hub of Tennessee and the home of the Grand Ole Opry, both the theatre and the amusement park. By the way the park is pet friendly.

If you visit the Grand Ole Opry theatre be sure to take the backstage tour, it is worth your while. Cities with Off-Leash Dog Parks include Clarksville, Chattanooga, Cookeville, Knoxville, Nashville, Hixon and Murfreesboro.

National Parks with hiking include Big South Fork National Recreation Area, Fort Donelson National Battlefield, Obed Wild & Scenic River, Stones River National Battlefield and Shiloh National Military Park. Dogs are not allowed on the trails of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, however, they are permitted in Tennessee’s State Parks.
