Spirit Airlines dog

IN CABIN TRAVEL: FLY WITH A SMALL DOG, CAT OR SMALL BIRD
If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in Spirit Airlines Airlines pet policy to travel in-cabin, you will need an approved airline pet carrier. Spirit Airlines does not require a health certificate for accompanied pets traveling in the cabin. You must notify Spirit Airlines that you are traveling with a pet. Reservations cannot be made online.

Spirit Airlines will not transport birds to or from Puerto Rico or St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

CHECKED BAGGAGE OR CARGO TRAVEL: FLY WITH A LARGER DOG OR CAT OR OTHER ANIMAL
Spirit Airlines does not transport dogs, cats or other animals in the cargo hold.

Spirit Airlines Pet Policy

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
If you are traveling to another country, Spirit Airlines will want to see that you have the proper documents to enter that country with your pet. Most countries have their own version of a Veterinary Certificate. In addition, some countries require an Import Permit. Find pet passport forms and instructions in the Pet Travel Store.

Has anyone traveled with pet carrier on spirit. Which pet carrier did you use. I am finding it hard to find one that is 9" high.
Posted on 2013-12-15 03:12:18.0
PetTravel
You can get a soft sided carrier that is higher than 9" as long as it will squish down to 9". The airlines care about getting it under the seat.

is there an additional cost for a 5lb dog to travel or can this be considered a carry-on? I have booked my ticket on a travel site but did not remember about the dog as this is my first time trying to travel with a pet :)

You need to contact Spirit Airlines because there is a charge for your pet and they only allow a limited number of pets in the cabin on each flight.

Hi, i'm moving to the united statesrom colombia. will spirit airline let me travel with my pet rabbit? none of the other airlines here will let me and i'm desperate at this point, i can't leave my pet behind.
Posted on 2014-02-16 04:20:05.0
PetTravel
Spirit does not offer cargo services and only permits small dogs, cats and household birds in the cabin. You may have to select an airline that will accept your rabbit as checked baggage. It will travel in the cargo hold, but will be on the same plane as you are. Most all airlines offer this service. WestJet will allow rabbits in the cabin, but they don't fly to Colombia.

Peter - unfortunately, Spirit does not permit pets to travel on international flights except Puerto Rico and St. Thomas US Virgin Islands.

Your puppy will need a health certificate to enter the US. If your puppy is less than 3 months of age, you will need to sign a home confinement form and attest that you will have the puppy vaccinated for rabies at 3 months of age. You will need to contact the airlines for the cost.
Posted on 2014-04-24 03:32:10.0

how much would a 14 pound dog cost to fly LAX to Houston?
Posted on 2014-06-07 04:00:55.0
PetTravel
Suzie - your puppy will need a health certificate issued within 10 days of entry. Also, if your puppy is over 3 months of age, it will need proof of rabies vaccination which should be given at least 30 days prior to entry. IHowever, if you haven't completed the wait time or your puppy is not yet 3 months, then you will sign a home quarantine document which also states that you will get your puppy vaccinated for rabies at 3 months.

My husband and I will be moving back to the US (Florida) from Puerto Rico in August with our two cats. What documentation, if any, is required?
Posted on 2014-07-11 10:09:48.0
PetTravel
Hi Joan - you should travel with proof of rabies vaccination even though it is not required to enter the US. The airlines may require a health certificate. The State of Florida requires both documents.
Posted on 2014-07-17 00:40:21.0
PetTravel
Dannette - I doubt that the airlines will allow that unless your pets are very small. However, many airlines will permit several dogs to travel in the same crate in the hold if they are known to each other and the same species.

Would I need to bring my dogs shot records with, for him to fly with me?
Posted on 2014-08-26 17:21:57.0
PetTravel
Deborah - Spirit is not going to ask for them, but the US states require that pets be vaccinated for rabies, so it is always a good idea to travel with that information.

A pet cannot fly unaccompanied on Spirit Airlines. You can find another airline that offers cargo services and contact them for details.

Hi Olger - start with American. They have a non-stop flight from SJO to MIA. Other airlines are TACA, Avianca, Copa, Delta and Air Canada. As your pups are traveling unaccompanied, you would want to contact their cargo department.

I will like to know what extra documentation, if there is any, I will have to do in order to leave him over there. If you could help me, It will be of so much help for me. Thanks, I will really appreciate it.

Aifos - we are not aware of additional documentation required to leave your pet in Nicaragua. You will need to contact local authorities and have him registered if he will become a resident of the country.

I want to bring a 7 week old chihuahua puppy from Texas to my home in florida. the puppy has it's first shots, but I don't know if it is old enough for rabies vaccine yet (I'll check w/ vet). I will have an airline approved carrier, what are my requirements please?
Posted on 2014-10-22 20:57:27.0
PetTravel
Ann - you will need to check the airline's requirements for minimum age to fly. (usually 8 weeks) You should be able to fly with your pet in the cabin. Most airlines do not require health certificates for in-cabin travel. Rabies vaccinations should not be given until 3 months of age. If you are traveling with your pup, it should be fine.
Posted on 2014-10-28 02:52:16.0

Does it matter what size of crate you have? My dog is small but just want to be sure.

Alex - to fly your pet on Spirit Airlines, you should have a soft sided pet carrier. It will allow for more room for your pet and will "squish" down to fit under the seat. Here are some examples: of airline compliant pet carriers: http://www.pettravelstore.com/categories/Pet-Carriers-%26-Accessories/Pet-Carriers/

Your carrier must have a waterproof bottom, adequate ventilation and be secure (escape proof). Your pet's head cannot stick out from the carrier.

Is there a reason why spirit doesn't allow pets to travel from another country? I want to bring my dog from Colombia with me, he is only 5 pounds. It's a 3 hour straight flight from Colombia to Ft Lauderdale. Closer than many domestic flights.

Carolina - international travel with a pet increases the liability for the airline. If requirements are not met, the pet will be returned to the country of origin. This causes the airlines to be up to date on all country requirements. It was a policy call on Spirit's part.

I want my son to fly my cat from ohio to las vegas. Non-stop flight. any chance anybody has tips on a carrier? how to manage with thirst and toileting of animals on a flight? Comments on seating for flight with a cat? thanks
Posted on 2015-07-13 00:01:06.0

Jenna - get a seat by the window. Your kitty should do fine on the flight with not urinating as long as it is accustomed to its carrier. The best carrier we have found for cats is the SturdiBag carrier (created for show cats) All the carriers here are airline compliant: http://www.pettravelstore.com/categories/Pet-Carriers-%26-Accessories/Pet-Carriers/
