When transporting a pet by a commercial airline, it is extremely important to understand their pet policy. These policies vary between airlines. Some allow small pets to fly in the cabin and others don’t. It is important to know the answers to all your questions before making your decision to fly your pet on any commercial airline. Does AeroMexico allow pets? How much does it cost to fly a dog or cat on AeroMexico? What documents will I need? What are the carrier or crate requirements for AeroMexico? All your answers related to AeroMexico pet policy are answered below.
Note: It is important to mention that the pet policy of the airline that operates your pet’s route will preside over the policy of the airline that owns the route. This is important to note because if the operating airline changes during your trip, then you will likely need to claim and recheck your pet on the next airline. This will cause you to clear customs and enter the layover country. You will need time and extra documentation to accommodate this process during the layover unless flying domestically.
Classes of service offered to pets by commercial airlines
- In-Cabin: Pets traveling in the cabin must fly with an adult passenger and travel in an airline compliant
carrier stowed under the seat. - Checked Baggage: Pets traveling with a passenger that are not permitted in the cabin due to size or breed can be transported as checked baggage in the cargo hold.
- Air Cargo: Unaccompanied, very large pets or pets flying to countries that require that pets enter under air cargo will travel as manifest cargo in the hold.

Where is AeroMexico based?
AeroMexico is based out of Mexico City International Airport in Mexico City. Most layovers within AeroMexico’s network will occur in this airport.
What countries does AeroMexico fly to?
AeroMexico is Mexico’s largest and oldest carrier operating more than 600 daily flights to more than 90 cities in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, India, the Caribbean, North and South America including the United States, Canada and Mexico. Countries include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Peru, S. Korea, Spain, United Kingdom and United States*.

AeroMexico Pet Policy – In Cabin
If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in Delta Airline’s pet policy to travel in-cabin, it will need an airline-compliant pet carrier unless you are flying with a service dog who is trained to assist you in a task required to address a physical or medical disability.
Pets allowed on AeroMexico in the cabin
Small cats and dogs. Pets must be clean, healthy, harmless and mannerly. All damages to the aircraft will be the responsibility of the passenger.
Reservations
You should notify AeroMexico that you are traveling with a pet prior to making your own booking. You must be an adult passenger and your pet will count towards your carry-on allowance.
Age/Weight requirements
Minimum age is 8 weeks. Maximum weight including pet and its carrier is 19.8 lbs. (9 kg).
Pet carrier requirements
Your pet’s carrier must:
- Have adequate ventilation on at least 3 sides (domestic US) or 4 sides (international)
- Be large enough for your pet to stand up and turn around comfortably
- Be able to accommodate your entire pet. No part of your pet can extend out of the carrier
- Be able to fit under the seat in front of you
- Have a waterproof bottom and absorbent pet pad
- Have secure fasteners (heavy duty zippers are recommended)
Maximum carrier dimensions: 6″ x 12″ x 8″ (40 x 30 x 20 cm). One carrier is permitted per passenger.
Exit row or bulkhead seats cannot be reserved when flying with a pet. Passengers traveling with pets will be assigned a window seat with the exception of flying on Embraer 190 aircraft. In this case, an aisle seat will be assigned. Pets may not be placed on airline seats. Carriers must remain on the floor.
Pets must remain in carriers for the duration of the flight. Feeding of your pet during the flight is not allowed.

Forms required
Domestic: proof of current rabies vaccination (pets over 3 months of age) and health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 5 days of travel.
International: proof of current rabies vaccination according to destination country requirements (pets over 3 months of age), health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 5 days of travel and Animal Health Export Certificate from SAGARPA – SENASICA. All other required documentation for the destination country must be available.
Route restrictions
Pets flying to the United Kingdom must fly as air cargo.
Check in
You should check in at the ticket counter with your pet in its carrier at least 2 hours before flight departure.

Cost
Domestic: Between $1,350 MXN and $1700 MXN depending on season of travel.
International: Between $162 USD and $168 USD depending on season of travel.
Service dog pet policy
All service dogs may fly in the cabin at no charge. They must be trained by a person or organization that specializes in service dog training to provide specific tasks for a person with a disability.
Service dogs must be checked in at least 2 hours prior to departure. They must be suitably marked, harnessed and leashed. They must fit in the space provided at their passenger’s feet without intruding on cabin operations or other passengers. If adequate space is not available, the flight crew will reassign the passenger’s seat.
They must be clean, mannerly and not show any signs of aggression toward other passengers or the flight crew. One service dog is permitted per disabled passenger. No dangerous breeds will be accepted as service dogs.
If flights involve the United States, Department of Transportation forms must be completed and submitted at least 48 hours prior to departure. All required documentation required for the destination country must be provided at check in.
Emotional support animal (ESA) pet policy
Only cats and dogs are accepted as emotional support animals. There is a maximum weight of 26 lbs. (12 kg) and maximum measurements of 22″ long x 12″ tall. They cannot fly unaccompanied or with minors. Prenotification is required.
Passenger must provide a letter from licensed physician stating passengers need to travel with their animal for a recognized mental disability and a description of that animal at check-in. The certificate must be issued by a mental health specialist on their letterhead, with their license number, business name, address, phone number, and signature.
ESAs must remain on the floor or on their passenger’s lap for the duration of the flight. They must not intrude on the aisle or the space of other passengers. hey must be clean, mannerly and not show any signs of aggression toward other passengers or the flight crew.
If your itinerary involves another airline (such as Iberia or AirEuropa) or flying to the United Kingdom, your ESA must fly under airline regulations for pets as these airlines no longer accept ESAs.
Note that service dogs and emotional support animals are subject to the same regulations as other pets of their species when traveling internationally.
AeroMexico Pet Policy – Checked Baggage
If the size of your pet is too large to fit in an airline-compliant pet carrier, or it is a pet other than a cat or dog, it will be transported as checked baggage on AeroMexico if it is flying with an adult passenger. This section of the cargo department has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin.
Live animals are checked in by reservation employees and are checked in at the airport terminal. The airline will move your pet between aircraft in their fleet during layovers if the layover is not over about 3 hours in length.
Pets allowed to fly as checked baggage on AeroMexico
Cats, dogs and household birds are accepted as checked baggage. Pets must be healthy, clean and not display aggressive behavior.
Reservations
The number of pets accepted in the baggage compartment is limited by aircraft type so you should contact AeroMexico to make reservations for your pet before booking your ticket. You must be an adult passenger and be on the same flight as your pet.
Age/Weight requirements
Minimum age: 8 weeks of age. Minimum age will depend on destination country requirements if flying internationally. The weight of your pet and its crate should not exceed 99 lbs. (45 kg) otherwise your pet will fly via AeroMexico Cargo
Pet crate requirements

Pets flying to the United Kingdom must fly as air cargo.
Forms Required
Domestic: proof of current rabies vaccination (pets over three months of age) and health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within five days of travel.
International: proof of current rabies vaccination according to destination country requirements (pets over three months of age), health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 5 days of travel and Animal Health Export Certificate from SAGARPA – SENASICA. All other required documentation and CITES permits (if applicable) for the destination country must be available.

AeroMexico Pet Policy – Air Cargo
All live animals flying as air cargo travel under an airline manifest or air waybill and are tracked throughout the entire flight. The airlines are responsible for caring for your pet during layovers as well. Unlike checked baggage, pets are generally checked in and claimed at the airline’s cargo facility. This facility is located on airport grounds; however, not the terminal. Many airlines require that an agent books the transport. Pets allowed to fly as air cargo on AeroMexico
Warm blooded mammals and birds, aquatics and insects as well as reptiles and rodents can be transported as air cargo. AeroMexico Cargo will not ship dangerous or offensive animals, non-human primates for experiments, threatened species, unhealthy animals or pets that will be banned by the country of destination.

Age requirements
Minimum age of 8 weeks for domestic flights. The minimum age for international flights is dependent on the regulations of the destination country.
Pet crate requirements

Temperature Restrictions
or summer travel are 75°F for brachycephalic (snub-nosed) pets. Temperature restrictions are for the safety of your pet.

Forms Required

Check in
Your pet will be checked in at the AeroMexico cargo facility which is located on airport grounds; however, with few exceptions, not at the airport terminal.
Cost
The cost will depend on the weight of your pet and its crate as well as dimensions of the crate and the specific route. The assistance of agents is recommended when flying a pet as air cargo.
Pet Crate Requirements
All pet crates must conform to regulations set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The container must be large enough for your pet(s) to stand, turn around, and lie down. The crate must be made of fiberglass, metal, rigid plastics, weld metal mesh, solid wood or plywood.
The crate door must have a secure, spring-loaded, all-around locking system with the pins extending beyond the horizontal extrusions above and below the door. The floor must be waterproof. The crate must not have wheels attached when checking your pet. Metal hardware should be used to fasten the top and bottom halves of your pet crate together. Aero Mexico requires either metal or plastic threaded nuts and bolts to secure both halves of the crate.

All pets should be acclimated to their crates prior to travel. This may take weeks or even months to accomplish; however it is the best thing you can do for pet before flying.

Temperature Restrictions – Checked Baggage and Air Cargo
When temperatures rise above or drop under certain levels, commercial airlines will prohibit the transport of live animals inWhen temperatures rise above or drop under certain levels, commercial airlines will prohibit the transport of live animals in the cargo hold. These restrictions are implemented for the safety of your pet. It is important to note that the risk from high or low temperatures is not when your pet is airborne. The risks come during preflight holding, loading on the tarmac and taxiing to the take-off runway.
Pets will not be accepted as checked baggage or air cargo when actual or forecasted temperatures are above 85°F (29.4°C) or below 45°F (7.2°C) at any airport on the itinerary. Pets may be accepted at temperatures below 45°F with an acclimation certificate, however, no pet will be transported at temperatures lower than 20°F (-6.6°C).
Note that the temperature restrictions for summer travel are lower for brachycephalic (snub-nosed) pets.
Cold-blooded animals are exempt from these restrictions.

Breeds Banned by AeroMexico
The following breeds will not be flown by AeroMexico in the cargo hold due to their snub-nose (brachycephalic) characteristics:
DOGS: Affenpinscher, American Bully, American Staffordshire Terrier, Argentine Dogo, Bordeaux Mastiff, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog – all breeds including the American, English and French Bulldog, Bull Mastiff, Canary dog, Cane Corso, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chow Chow, English Toy, Japanese Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Llasa Apso, Mastiff (All Types), Maltese, Newfoundland, Pekingese, Pug (all breeds), Saint Bernard, Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Tiberian Spaniel, Toy English Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier, Any mixed breeds that display brachycephalic characteristics.
CATS: Burmese Cats, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan Cats, Persian Cats
The following dog breeds are deemed dangerous by AeroMexico and will not be permitted on their aircraft: Akita Inu, Anatolian Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd Malinois, Brazilian Fila, Japanese Tosa and Rottweiler.
