When transporting a pet by a commercial airline, it is extremely important to understand their pet policy. These policies vary between airlines. Some allow small pets to fly in the cabin and others don’t. It is important to know the answers to all your questions before making your decision to fly your pet on any commercial airline. Does Aegean Airlines allow pets? How much does it cost to fly a dog or cat on Aegean Airlines? What documents will I need? What are the carrier or crate requirements for Aegean Airlines? All your answers related to Aegean Airlines pet policy are answered below.

Note: It is important to mention that the pet policy of the airline that operates your pet’s route will preside over the policy of the airline that owns the route. This is important to note because if the operating airline changes during your trip, then you will likely need to claim and recheck your pet on the next airline. This will cause you to clear customs and enter the layover country. You will need time and extra documentation to accommodate this process during the layover unless flying domestically.

Classes of service offered to pets by commercial airlines

  • In-Cabin: Pets traveling in the cabin must fly with an adult passenger and travel in an airline compliant
    carrier stowed under the seat.
  • Checked Baggage: Pets traveling with a passenger that are not permitted in the cabin due to size or breed can be transported as checked baggage in the cargo hold.
  • Air Cargo: Unaccompanied, very large pets or pets flying to countries that require that pets enter under air cargo will travel as manifest cargo in the hold.

Where is Aegean Airlines based?

Aegean Airlines is based out of Athens International Airport in Athens, Greece. It also has hubs in Macedonia International Airport in Thessaloniki and Larnaca International Airport in Cyprus. Most layovers within Aegean Airline’s network will occur in these airports.

What countries does Aegean Airlines fly to?

This pet-friendly airline provides service to all EU Member States as well as Albania, Armenia, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Servia, Switzerland, Tunisia, Tukey, the United Arab Emirates (cargo only) and the United Kingdom (cargo only). They provide services to pets in their Airbus 201, 203, 321 aircraft as well as DH8 and ATRATR 42-600 and 72-600s.

If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in Aegean Airline’s pet policy to travel in-cabin, it will need an airline-compliant pet carrier unless you are flying with a service dog who is trained to assist you in a task required to address a physical or medical disability.

Pets allowed on Aegean Airlines in the cabin

Aegean Airlines allows small dogs and cats to fly in the cabin with an adult passenger. A maximum of one pet per passenger is permitted unless traveling with two pets of the same species known to each other whose total weight including the carrier does not exceed 17.6 pounds (8 kg).

Pets must be clean, healthy, harmless, not sedated and mannerly. Passengers traveling with an infant are not permitted to fly a pet in the cabin.

Reservations

Pet owners should contact Aegean Airlines online or through their call center to make a reservation for their pet. There is a limited number of pets allowed per flight and reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners are encouraged to reserve a window seat. Exit row or bulkhead seats cannot be reserved when flying with a pet.

Age requirements

Pet dogs and cats must be microchipped, then vaccinated for rabies and wait for 21 days before flying. As rabies vaccinations cannot be administered prior to 12 weeks of age, the minimum age of transport is 15 weeks.

Pet carrier requirements

All pet carriers must have a waterproof bottom, secure fasteners, adequate ventilation, enough room for your pet to stand up and turn around comfortably and fit under the seat in front of you. Pets are not permitted outside of their carrier for the duration of the flight.

Maximum measurements for Airbus 201, 203, 321 aircraft: 21″L x 15.7″W x 9″H (55cm x 40cm x 23cm)
Maximum measurements for DH8-100 and ATR: 15.7″L x 9.8″W x 9.8″H (40cm x 25cm x 25cm)

Forms required

An EU Pet Passport (resident pets) or EU Health Certificate (non-resident pets) is required for inter-EU transport, and all documentation required for non-EU destination countries should be available.

Route restrictions

Pets cannot fly in the cabin on route to Dubai or London.

At Athens International Airport and Thessaloniki Airport, there are special check-in counters exclusively for passengers with pets. Pet owners should check in at least 1 hours prior to departure. Considerations for earlier check in should be given during periods of high airport demand (holidays, bad weather, etc.).

Cost

The cost per direction for all domestic flights within Greece is EUR 35. The cost per direction for all international flights is EU 65.

Service dog pet policy

Aegean Airlines will accept both service dogs and dogs who assist rescue workers in the cabin. Service dogs must be trained to assist a disabled passenger. Proof of this training by one of the following organizations:

  • Assistance Dogs International
  • International Guide Dog Federation
  • WU Guide Dog Federation
  • Nationally Certified Guide Dog School

If the size of your pet is too large to fit in an airline-compliant pet carrier, or it is a pet other than a cat or dog, it will be transported as checked baggage on Aegean Airlines if it is flying with an adult passenger. This section of the cargo department has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin.

Live animals are checked in by reservation employees and are checked in at the airport terminal. The airline will move your pet between aircraft in their fleet during layovers if the layover is not over about 3 hours in length.

Pets allowed on Aegean Airlines

Dogs and cats whose weight including crate is greater than 8kg but less than 25 kg.

Reservations

Reservations should be made by contacting Aegean Airlines online or via their customer call center. There is a total number of 5 pets per passenger per flight in all classes of service.

Age requirements

Minimum age of transport is 15 weeks of age to meet vaccination requirements.

Pet crate requirements

All crates must conform to regulations imposed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). For more information, see PET CRATE REQUIREMENTS.

Route or aircraft restrictions

Layovers cannot be more than three hours.

Temperature Restrictions

When temperatures rise above or drop under certain levels, commercial airlines will prohibit the transport of live animals in the cargo hold. These restrictions are implemented for the safety of your pet. It is important to note that the risk from high or low temperatures is not when your pet is airborne. The risks come during preflight holding, loading on the tarmac and taxiing to the take-off runway.

Aegean Airlines will not permit the transport of live animals when temperatures at any point of the itinerary exceed the following temperatures anywhere on the route including origin, layover and destination airports:

  • 80°F (27°C) Maximum for live animal shipments
  • 20°F (-7°C) Minimum for live animal shipments

Note that the temperature restrictions for summer travel are 75°F for brachycephalic (snub-nosed) pets. Temperature restrictions are for the safety of your pet.

All live animals flying as air cargo travel under an airline manifest or air waybill and are tracked throughout the entire flight. The airlines are responsible for caring for your pet during layovers as well. Unlike checked baggage, pets are generally checked in and claimed at the airline’s cargo facility. This facility is located on airport grounds; however, not the terminal. Many airlines require that an agent books the transport. If you need a licensed agent to arrange your pet’s transport, send us an email at info@pettraveltransport.com.
