Turkish Airlines Pet Policy

When transporting a pet by a commercial airline, it is extremely important to understand their pet policy. These policies vary between airlines. Some allow small pets to fly in the cabin and others don’t. It is important to know the answers to all your questions before making your decision to fly your pet on any commercial airline. Can my pet fly in the cabin on Turkish Airlines? How much does it cost to fly a dog or cat on Turkish Airlines? What documents will I need? What are the carrier or crate requirements for Turkish Airlines? All your answers related to Turkish Airlines pet policy are answered below.

Note: It is important to mention that the pet policy of the airline that operates your pet’s route will preside over the policy of the airline that owns the route. This is important to note because if the operating airline changes during your trip, then you will likely need to claim and recheck your pet on the next airline. This will cause you to clear customs and enter the layover country. You will need time and extra documentation to accommodate this process during the layover unless flying domestically.

Classes of service offered to pets by commercial airlines

  • In-Cabin: Pets traveling in the cabin must fly with an adult passenger and travel in an airline compliant
    carrier stowed under the seat.
  • Checked Baggage: Pets traveling with a passenger that are not permitted in the cabin due to size or breed can be transported as checked baggage in the cargo hold.
  • Air Cargo: Unaccompanied, very large pets or pets flying to countries that require that pets enter under air cargo will travel as manifest cargo in the hold.

Can my pet fly with me in the cabin? Yes (Certain Flights)
Can my pet fly with me as checked baggage? Yes
Can my pet fly as manifest cargo? Yes

Where is Turkish Airlines based?

Turkish Airlines [IATA:TK] is based out of Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST) in Istanbul, Türkiye. Most layovers within Turkish Airlines’ network will occur in this airport. The lounge includes an indoor space and an outdoor terrace and can accommodate up to 78 animals at a time, including 32 dogs, 36 cats, and 10 birds. Related: Is your pet’s crate IATA-compliant?

All pets should be acclimated to their crates prior to travel. This may take weeks or even months to accomplish; however it is the best thing you can do for your pet before flying.

Related: Acclimating your pet to its crate or carrier

When temperatures rise above or drop under certain levels, commercial airlines will prohibit the transport of live animals in the cargo hold. These restrictions are implemented for the safety of your pet. It is important to note that the risk from high or low temperatures is not when your pet is airborne. The risks come during preflight holding, loading on the tarmac and taxiing to the take-off runway.

Pets will not be accepted as checked baggage or air cargo when actual or forecasted temperatures are above 85°F (29.4°C) or below 45°F (7.2°C) at any airport on the itinerary. Pets may be accepted at temperatures below 45°F with an acclimation certificate, however, no pet will be transported at temperatures lower than 20°F (-6.6°C).

Note that the temperature restrictions for summer travel are lower for brachycephalic (snub-nosed) pets.

Cold-blooded animals are exempt from these restrictions.

Related: Why temperatures matter for pets flying in the cargo hold

Turkish Airlines has classified the following breeds as brachycephalic (snub-or flat-nosed) and they must fly in the cabin (if small enough and less than six months of age) or as air cargo in a crate meets the following conditions:

  • The pet must fly in a crate that is one size larger than the cage that is normally required.
  • The crate must have ventilation on all four sides.
  • “Indemnity Letter” must be submitted by the shipper.
  • The temperature at the place of origin and destination must be below 27°C.

DOGS: Affenpinscher, Boxer, Boston Terrier, Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (All breeds), Bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Cavalier King Charles, Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chongqing Dog, Chow Chow, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Toy Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Lhasa Apso, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese, Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Pug (all breeds), Shih Tzu, Shar Pei, Small Brabant and Tibetan Spaniel.

CATS: Burmese, Bombay, British Longhair, British Shorthair, Burmese, Burmilla, Chinchilla, Exotic, Exotic Longhair, Foldex, Himalayan, Munchkin, Persian, Scottish Fold and Selkirk Rex.

Related: Risks for snub-nosed pets flying in the cargo hold

Turkish Airlines has classified these breeds and their mixes as dangerous and, as such, will only be flown as air cargo in a Container Requirements (CR) 82 compliant pet crate:

Alano Español, Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, American Bulldog, Anatolian Shepherd, Assyrian Shepherd, Boxer, Broholmer, Bullmastiff, Bully Kutta, Campeiro Bulldog, Cane Corso, Cão Fila de São Miguel, Caucasian Ovcharka, Chongqing Dog, Chiihuahua, Cimarrón Uruguayo, Continental Bulldog, Doberman, Dogo Guatemalteco, Dogue Brasileiro, Dogue de Bordeaux, Mastiff (All breeds), Great Dane, Neapolitan Mastiff, Olde English Bulldogge, Perro de Presa Canario, Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Rottweiler, Serrano Bulldog, Tosa and Wolf Dog Hybrids,

Note that the following breeds and their mixes are not permitted to enter some countries and, as such, will not be permitted for carriage on Turkish Airlines:

American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pitbull terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, Pitbull Terrier and American Bully.

Breeds such as Sivas Kangal, the Angora Cat and the Van Cat, which are indigenous to Türkiye and under protection, are accepted on international flights departing from Türkiye provided that approval is obtained prior to the flight from the relevant directorates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye.

Pet friendly private jet charter

Another option for pet owners who do not want their pet to fly in the cargo hold is a pet-friendly private jet charter. Your pet can fly in your lap, at your feet or beside you comfortably without being confined. We can arrange flights from anywhere in the world to anywhere you need to go on your time schedule, without the crowds or commotion of a commercial airport.

Sedated pets will not be accepted except in exceptional circumstances and only under veterinarian request and guidance.

Turkish Airlines has a pet lounge in Istanbul International Airport for pets flying in the cargo hold. Pets can access the lounge if their departing flight (from IST) has a layover of more than 69 minutes, or their connecting flight has a layover of more than 75 minutes prior to departure.

Hello. My dog a Pomeranian has a rabies vaccination every 3years as is a required vaccination in Norway. Is this acceptable for Turkish Airlines? Regards Denise Sözmen.

    1. Susan Avatar

Denise – Turkish Airlines will confirm that your Pomeranian meets regulations to enter its destination country. If your destination country is Turkey, then the rabies vaccination should be administered within 12 months of entry. In any case, all multi-year rabies vaccinations listed on the health certificate should have the ending validity date circled and initialed by the issuing veterinarian.

We are flying from Manchester to turkey 1:30 stop then to Thailand for 3 weeks my dog is Pomeranian size 23cm tall by 31cm long all upto date with vaccinations.
How easy to get him travel there & home again .
Are flights are booked for may .
What’s the full cost of this return?
Can he be carried as hand luggage under seat in front of us ?

    1. Susan Avatar

Anthony – your Pom can fly in the cabin on TA if it can fit comfortably in an airline-compliant pet carrier with dimensions according to information here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/airlines/turkish-airlines-pet-policy/. Your dog must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier. If you stay on TA in and out of IST, then no documentation to enter Turkey will be required. However, as you are visiting and transiting a country classified as unlisted by the UK (Turkey and Thailand) a rabies titer test will be required. Also, although your Pom can fly out of the UK in the cabin or as checked baggage, it must return to the UK as air cargo. You can contact Turkish Airlines cargo department at +90 850 333 0 777.

İ have a Golden retriever, I need to fly with her from İstanbul to Dushanbe
But she is 52kg without her crate. How can I get her with myself regarding the weight policy.

        Thank you
        Rachel

        1. Susan Avatar

Rachel – due to your Golden’s weight, it will need to fly as air cargo. You will need to contact Turkish Airlines’ Cargo Department for further information. The airlines will make every attempt to fly your Golden on the same flight but cannot guarantee that will be the case. It will depend on the demands on the cargo hold on your specific flight.

Hi I’m am planning to fly with my dog from UK to Turkey with Turkish Airlines. Is the rabies vaccination the only vaccine required to be accepted on the flight as she had not had other vaccination for the last few years?

    1. Susan Avatar

Kim – your cat must be microchipped, then vaccinated for rabies, then wait for 30 days, then get a rabies titer test. Other vaccinations are also required. See step #2 here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/turkiye-pet-import-requirements/.

I will be traveling to Russia with my pets and we have a layover in Turkey. Do I need any other documents besides the health certificate to Russia and vaccine information for my pets?

    1. Susan Avatar

Nicole – if you are staying on the same airline in and out of Turkey, then you will stay in the secure area of the airport until you board your next flight if your pet is flying in the cabin. If your pet is flying as checked baggage, the airline will transfer your pet to another of their aircraft if the layover is under 3 hours. If you are changing airline companies in Turkey, your pet will need to clear customs and enter Turkey. In this case, import requirements for your pet to enter Turkey must be met.

Good morning! I’m planning to fly from Abu Dhabi to Bucharest( transit in Istanbul) with my cat on 16 of april. What are the mandatory documents i need to have prior to flying as the website has vague instructions. Thanks in advance! Ionela

    1. Susan Avatar

Ionela – if you are flying in and out of Istanbul with Turkish Airlines with you cat in the cabin, you will stay in the secure area of the airport until you board your next flight. If your cat is flying as accompanied checked baggage in the cargo hold, TA will move your cat within their fleet if the layover is under three hours. In either case, your cat will transit Turkey and docs are not required. If you are changing airline companies, then your cat will need to conform to regulations to enter Turkey which you can find here.

    1. Susan Avatar

Justin – you can find pet import requirements for Pakistan here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/pakistan-pet-import-requirements/. You will need an import permit for each pet. TA will allow one pet to fly per passenger, but if your dog is small enough to fly in the cabin, ask TA if you can purchase an extra seat.

    Hello dear,
I have two cats, they will stay in the cargo hold, and will take Turkish Airlines from Milan to Guangzhou, China on April 9, with a transfer in Istanbul for 80 minutes. I want to know if 80 minutes is too short for cats in the cargo hold?
Then my two cats will be placed in a large box and stay together. I saw on the website that it is allowed to do, but I don’t know if it is really possible. I rarely have such a situation. Can you give me some information? This is very important to me.
    Thank you very much, Zhou

    1. Susan Avatar

Zhou – you will need to ask Turkish Airlines about the layover. Eighty minutes is not a long time to transfer pets from aircraft to aircraft (assuming they are changing aircrafts). As for the question about the crates, according to TA pet policies, pets of the same breed, each weighing a maximum of 14 kg, close in size and accustomed to each other, can be kept in a single crate. If the weight of any of your pets is greater than 14 kg, they must travel in their own crate. If you need pet import requirements to import a pet to China, you can find them here.

Hi, we plan to travel with a toy poodle (4 kg ) from Bulgaria to Vietnam with Turkish airlines.
She has rabies vaccine every year, microchip and I guess a health certificate for current status needed.

Can you recommend any brand or platform to buy an appropriate carrier pet for TK as their requirements for sizes are quite hard to find?

    1. Susan Avatar

Peter – The goal is to have the carrier fit under the seat in front of you. You can contact the airline to find out the specific aircraft that serves your route and ask them what the dimensions are under the seat in front of you. Know that soft-sided carriers will compress in height to fit under the seat.

    Hi,
I would like to travel with my mini poodle from UK to Turkey. He is 8 months old and weight around 9kg. I understand he can go as checked baggage.
Can you please confirm this is the case? Also, which airports I can travel with a pet from? Is it Edinburgh ok?
Also, do I need to wait for a month after he gets the rabbies vaccine?
Is it guaranteed that he will be able to travel with me if I select so when I’m booking the tickets (given everything is ok with the create and other things)? Is there any chance airline says they cannot take him to the flight on the day of the flight?
    Thanks

    1. Susan Avatar

Pelin – although commercial airlines require that all live animals flying to the UK arrive as air cargo, this requirement is not in place on flights leaving the UK. TA should accept your pet as checked baggage out of any airport in the UK they serve. Your Poodle will need to conform to pet requirements to enter Turkey which you can find here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/turkiye-pet-import-requirements/. TA will take every effort to fly your pet on the same flight as you, especially when it is flying as checked baggage.

Pode me ajudar?

    1. Susan Avatar

I wanna flight from Düsseldorf to tehran and I have an American bully standard which is well trained and not aggressive at all
Is it allowed to flight with Turkish airlines?

    1. Susan Avatar

Mohammadamin – Turkish Airlines has classified this breeds and their mixes as dangerous and, as such, will only be flown as air cargo in a Container Requirements (CR) 82 compliant pet crate. You can find more information on the specifications of this crate here: https://blog.pettravel.com/index.php/cr-82-crate-requirements-for-flying-pit-bull-and-other-dog-breeds/.

Hi Susan, thanks for this useful info! We are moving from Dakar, Senegal to Islamabad, Pakistan, this summer and will travel on Turkish airlines with our dog (in the hold) and cat (in the cabin). The first flight is 7hrs, and then we have a 3.50 min layover in Istanbul, then another 5hrs flight until our final destination. I’ve seen online that with the cat we can visit a pet relief room while in transit, do you know any more about these? For our dog, will Turkish Airlines take him out of the crate to feed/give him water and let him relieve himself? Are we able to see him in transit? Thanks in advance for any information you might be able to provide.

    1. Susan Avatar

Nicki – sorry we did not see your inquiry. Most likely, your cat will not relieve itself during the layover as cats are generally too stressed by unfamiliar surroundings. Turkish Airlines will check your dog’s water and feed it if instructed (not advised). This is a good question for the airlines.

Im planning to travel with Turkish Airlines from Damman (KSA) to Santiago of Chile, Chile with my small dog inside cabin. Im bringing from Saudi all certifications for rabies vaccine, deworming and export permit/certification from Saudi Ministry. I have to do 8 hours transit in Istambul Airport to continue my trip to Chile. Please can you confirm me if is necessary to bring with me RNATT test for my dog to be on transit in the airport. Please note this is not required to enter to Chile (final destination) and I not going to leave transit area in Istambul.

    1. Susan Avatar

Jose – as your dog will be flying in the cabin with you, if you are staying on TA in and out of IST, you and your dog will stay in the secure area of the terminal until you board your next flight. In this case, you will not enter Turkey and the titer test is not required.

Hello, I am planning to travel from Lebanon to Canada with my 11-year-old Golden Retriever, who is a trained psychiatric service dog. She has Up-to-date vaccination records, pet health certificate, service dog registration, official training certification, and a signed psychiatric medical letter explaining my condition and confirming the need for a service dog. I would like to kindly confirm if Turkish Airlines allows psychiatric service dogs in the cabin on international flights (Beirut to Canada), and what specific documentation or procedures are required. Thank you

    1. Susan Avatar

Service dogs providing psychiatric support will be accepted as service dogs on flight segments involving the United States. Training certificates will be required. Unfortunately, it will be challenging to involve the US in your itinerary due to requirements for dogs entering or transiting the country from Lebanon as it is classified as a high-rabies country.

Hello! My fiance and our cat will be immigrating from Istanbul to Chicago (USA). We can’t find what vaccines Turkish Airline requires. I know the entry requirements for the U.S., but what is required for the airline? And is the record from the Department of Agriculture required? Thank you!

    1. Susan Avatar

Amanda – to export your cat from Turkey, it will need a health certificate issued just prior to travel, a microchip, and proof of rabies vaccination. A rabies titer test is not required for cats entering the United States.

Hello, if I travelling from Toronto to Russia, transiting in turkey with my cat, will they require a Favn test ?

    1. Susan Avatar

Anna – the answer to your question depends on whether you are changing airline companies in Istanbul. If no, then your pet will not enter Turkey and the test is not required. Your layover should be under 3 hours if your pet is flying as checked baggage in the cargo hold. If you are changing airline companies, then your pet will enter Turkey and need to conform to their requirements including the titer test.

    Hello,

I will be traveling from Houston (IAH) to Delhi (DEL) with a 3‑hour layover in Istanbul. I will be bringing my certified therapy dog as excess baggage.

    I’d like to know:

Is it possible for him to be taken out of his crate during the layover in Istanbul for a short break (to relieve himself and stretch)?

Will food and water be provided during the transit?

    Thank you!

    1. Susan Avatar

V A – in order for your dog to transit IST, it must stay with the same airline company in and out of Turkey and must stay in the secure area of the airport during the layover which is not accessible to passengers. Employees will check to see that there is ample water. Whether they remove your pet from its carrier is doubtful due to the fact that it is flying as checked baggage. You can speak with your airline about that.

    Hello,

I’m planning to travel with my service dog from Bucharest-Istanbul then Istanbul-US in October or November. Will they allow my dog in Cabin on both flights? She’s a Lab and weighs around 23Kg. I’m planning on flying with Turkish Airlines on both flights. I was considering even driving from Bucharest to Turkey as I’m not sure how they would handle that in Bucharest.

Also, if I drive to Turkey and spend a night there, would I require any additional paperwork from Turkish authorities such as a vet inspection and so on?

    1. Susan Avatar

Diu – Hungary is classified as a rabies-free country by the US. Turkey is classified as a high-rabies country. We would advise against transiting or entering Turkey at all costs as this will trigger a host of inconvenient regulations. Try flying from Hungary to another EU Member State, then to the US. Much easier.

Hey Susan! Thank you for your advice.

My concern with Bucharest-Romania was that they might not accommodate my need to board the service dog in Cabin. And I have the same concern for Hungary. Otherwise, a flight from Bucharest to an EU member state then to US would’ve been the most logical choice. Your other option would be to take Turkish Airlines and transit IST

        1. Susan Avatar

Diu – out of 150 airlines we follow, less than 5 of them will not allow service dogs in the cabin. It is hard to believe that an airline that serves a developed country like Romania would not allow service dogs in the cabin. Look for a large airline like Lufthansa, KLM, Swiss Airlines that all honor disabled passengers.Once landing in the US, you can take a connecting flight to your destination.

    Hello,
We plan to fly in 2 months from Miami to Sofia Bulgaria via IST on Turkish airlines but unsure whether our dog could fit in the in cabin carrier requirements provided by them 40cmx30cm by 23 cm. Our dog is 9.5 lbs Coton de Tulear. What is the proper way to measure her to make sure she will fit in the allowed carrier dimesions? If I measure her fully extended when laying down she is clearly longer than 40 cm. The other 2 measurements are fine. Also, do you know if they would allow us to fly in Business class with her?
If you think Turkish might be too restrictive, would Lufhansa allow is to puck a larger in cabin carrier for her? Also, would they allow is to fly premium economy or business of same route MIA, FRA SOF?

    Thanks!

    1. Susan Avatar

Peter – measure your dog from tip of nose to base of tail. Lufthansa does allow for a bit more room in the carrier: https://www.pettravel.com/information/airlines/lufthansa-pet-policy/. Acceptance in Business class can be variable depending on the aircraft.

    1. Susan Avatar

I am planning to travel from Uganda to Tunisia with my cat, transiting through Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight. The transit time will be approximately 2 hours.

Could you please confirm whether a rabies titer test is required for my cat in this case?

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on this matter.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

    1. Susan Avatar

Jinho – no titer test is required to transit IST if you are staying on the same airline in and out of IST and you and your cat remain in the secure area of the airport.

    Hi,
I’m planning on traveling from UK to Mozambique permanently, with a two hours connection in Istanbul.
My two cats had their rabbies shot in December, but we missed FeLV and Tricat.
They’ll travel with us in cabin.
Are these two required to transit in Istanbul?

    1. Susan Avatar

Maharai – if you are staying on the same airline in and out of IST, you and your cats will remain in the secure area of the airport until you board your next flight. In this case, your cats will not be entering Turkey.

Hello, My wife and I will be traveling with 2 cats from Cukurova, Turkey to Los Angeles with a connection in Istanbul. Can we travel with them in business class?

    1. Susan Avatar

Tony – some aircraft are designed with seats in business class that recline entirely. If this is the case on the aircraft that serves your route, TA will not accept them. It would be best to contact TA directly with your inquiry.

Hi there, I will be travelling with my pet rabbit from Toronto, Canada to Antalya, Turkey with 1 stop in Helsinki, Finland. My rabbit will be with me in the cabin as per Finnair Airlines approval. So far I have a health certificate, vaccination certificate (rabies vaccine) and he has a microchip, and I will be getting a CFIA endorsed health certificate. All documents are received within the timeline of the flight. By any chance are there any other documents I should have to avoid having any issues with customs in Antalya? I’ve heard that customs is easy going for cats and dogs but for rabbits it’s a lot more complicated.

    1. Susan Avatar

Kamran – there are veterinary attestations that must be on the health certificate which must be issued within 48 hours of departure. We do not have information specifically for importing a rabbit to Turkey; however, you can find attestations for rabbits entering Turkey from the US here: https://www.tarimorman.gov.tr/HAYGEM/Belgeler/DB_Hayvan_Ithalat_Ihracat_Sinir/Saglik_Sertifikasi_Ithalat/ABD/03_abd_tavsan_sertifikasi.pdf.
