When traveling with pets, it’s important to be aware of the specific pet friendly hotel policies to ensure a smooth stay. Most importantly, call ahead to make reservations. Some hotels can claim they are pet friendly; however, they only offer a limited number of rooms that will allow pets. Look for reviews from other pet owners to get a sense of how accommodating the hotel is for pets, as some properties may market themselves as pet friendly but have strict rules or lack amenities for pets.
Pet Fees
Most pet friendly hotel policies impose a non-refundable pet fee, which can range from $25 to $150, depending on the hotel and length of stay. This fee covers additional cleaning and maintenance required for accommodating pets. Some hotels may require a refundable deposit in case of damage or excessive cleaning needed due to the pet. This deposit is typically returned if no issues are found at the end of the stay.
Weight Limits
Many hotels have weight limits for pets. Small to medium-sized pets (usually up to 40 pounds) are commonly accepted, while some hotels may restrict larger breeds. Additionally, the number of pets per room may be limited. Generally, up to two pets will be accepted. Contact the hotel if you are traveling with more than two pets.
Dog Breed Restrictions
Certain dog breeds, particularly those considered aggressive or dangerous (e.g., Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, or Dobermans), may be restricted for safety reasons. It’s important to check if your pet’s breed is allowed before booking.
Cats
Some hotels do not allow cats as other guests may be prone to allergies. If you are traveling with a cat, get advance permission from your hotel. Oftentimes smaller accommodations like motels or inns will allow cats. If your cat may claw or harm furnishings, keep it confined.
Leaving pets unattended
Some hotels require pets to be crated or confined if left unattended in the room. Others may prohibit leaving pets alone altogether, as pets can cause disturbances, damage, or experience stress in unfamiliar environments. The last thing pet owners should do is to cause disruption to other guests by their dogs barking or their cats howling.
Where pets can go
Most pet-friendly hotels provide designated outdoor areas for pets to relieve themselves. These areas may have waste disposal stations for easy clean-up. Pets are usually not allowed in certain common areas of the hotel, such as dining areas, pools, or fitness centers. In most cases, pets are restricted to guest rooms and designated outdoor areas. If the restaurant serving your hotel has an outdoor dining area, pets are allowed to accompany their owners most times.
Required documents
Some pet-friendly hotel policies require proof of up-to-date vaccinations as well as flea and tick treatments. This ensures the health and safety of other guests and pets staying at the property. Some hotels may require a signed waiver releasing them from liability in case of pet-related incidents.
