Allegiant Pet Policy

When transporting a pet by a commercial airline, it is extremely important to understand their pet policy. These policies vary between airlines. Some allow small pets to fly in the cabin and others don’t. It is important to know the answers to all your questions before making your decision to fly your pet on any commercial airline. Does Allegiant allow pets on my specific route? How much does it cost to fly a dog or cat on Allegiant? What documents will I need? What are the carrier requirements for Allegiant? All your answers related to Allegiant pet policy are answered below.

Note: It is important to mention that the pet policy of the airline that operates your pet’s route will preside over the policy of the airline that owns the route. This is important to note because if the operating airline changes during your trip, then you will likely need to claim and recheck your pet on the next airline. This will cause you to clear customs and enter the layover country. You will need time and extra documentation to accommodate this process during the layover unless flying domestically.

Classes of service offered to pets by commercial airlines

  • In-Cabin: Pets traveling in the cabin must fly with an adult passenger and travel in an airline compliant
    carrier stowed under the seat.
  • Checked Baggage: Pets traveling with a passenger that are not permitted in the cabin due to size or breed can be transported as checked baggage in the cargo hold.
  • Air Cargo: Unaccompanied, very large pets or pets flying to countries that require that pets enter under air cargo will travel as manifest cargo in the hold.

Can my pet fly with me in the cabin? Yes (Certain Flights)
Can my pet fly with me as checked baggage? No
Can my pet fly as manifest cargo? No

Where is Allegiant based?

Allegiant [IATA:G4] is based out of Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most layovers within Allegiant’s network will occur in this airport.

What countries does Allegiant fly to?

Allegiant offers service to pets flying within the lower 48 United States. Live animals are not allowed on international or U.S. territory flights.

If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in Allegiant’s pet policy to fly in the cabin, it will need an airline-compliant pet carrier unless you are flying with a service dog who is trained to assist you in a task required to address a physical or medical disability.

Pets allowed flown by Allegiant in the cabin

Dogs and cats only are flown on Allegiant flights accompanied by passengers 15 years of age or older. Pets must be clean, healthy, harmless and mannerly.

Reservations

Pet owners should make reservations for their pet as soon as possible after making their reservation.

Age requirements

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to fly in the cabin.

Pet carrier requirements

Your pet’s carrier must:

  • Have adequate ventilation on at least 3 sides (domestic US) or 4 sides (international)
  • Be large enough for your pet to stand up and turn around comfortably
  • Be able to accommodate your entire pet. No part of your pet can extend out of the carrier
  • Be able to fit under the seat in front of you
  • Have a waterproof bottom and absorbent pet pad
  • Have secure fasteners (heavy duty zippers are recommended)

Maximum carrier measurements are 18″L x 14″W x 8″H. Soft sided carriers are preferred. Maximum of 2 pets per carrier if there is adequate space for both of them. One carrier per passenger is allowed. Carriers will count toward the 2 items passengers can bring on board; however, they are priced as excess baggage.

Exit row or bulkhead seats cannot be reserved when flying with a pet. Pets must remain in carriers for the duration of the flight.

Pet fee

The cost to fly a pet in the cabin on Allegiant is $50 USD per segment per carrier in each direction.

Service dog pet policy

All service dogs may fly in the cabin at no charge. They must be trained by a person or organization that specializes in service dog training to provide specific tasks for a person with a disability.

Service dogs must be suitably marked, harnessed and leashed. They must fit in the space provided at their passenger’s feet without intruding on cabin operations or other passengers. They must be clean, mannerly and not show any signs of aggression toward other passengers or the flight crew.

If flights involve the United States, Department of Transportation forms must be completed and submitted at least 48 hours prior to departure. All required documentation required for the destination country must be provided at check in.

Allegiant does not fly live animals in the cargo hold as checked baggage on any of its flights.

Allegiant does not fly live animals in the cargo hold as air cargo on any of its flights.

Pet friendly private jet charter

Another option for pet owners who do not want their pet to fly in the cargo hold is a pet-friendly private jet charter. Your pet can fly in your lap, at your feet or beside you comfortably without being confined. We can arrange flights from anywhere in the world to anywhere you need to go on your time schedule, without the crowds or commotion of a commercial airport.

Allegiant does not ban any dog or cat breeds; however, owners of brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds should fly with a carrier that provides plenty of ventilation. Ask for a glass of ice during the flight to hydrate your pet.

What happens if my puppy starts crying on my flight

    1. Susan Avatar

Debra – we always recommend acclimating dogs and cats to carriers before traveling, if possible. For a very young puppy, this is not always possible. Although we do not recommend feeding any dog during flight (it can stimulate bowels), your breeder may recommend a chew for your puppy. Also, put a small towel or blanket in the carrier with the mother’s scent on it. This may calm the puppy. Also, try to position the puppy so it can see you or your hand and hear your voice. All of these things tend to calm puppies.

I have a 25lb dog where does she travel on the plane

    1. Susan Avatar

Jennifer – your dog is too large to fly in the cabin. She will fly in the cargo hold which is temperature and pressure controlled.

I have an ESA DOG that’s been ok’d by DOT to fly. How do I file the Us DOT service animal form? Also is there any thing else I need to bring/file vet records etc…

    1. Susan Avatar

Tom – the forms are submitted to your airline (Allegiant). The answer to your second question depends on whether you are flying internationally. If no, then health certificates are recommended but not required to fly pets in the cabin on Allegiant. If yes, then your ESA is subject to all requirements for dogs entering the country. You can find them here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/.

How does one go about finding exact info needed BEFORE BOOKING THE FLIGHT to see if my husbands service dog meets the requirements as she was trained by my husband and me to suit his needs, no professional training. Specifically needing info on Allegiant flights.

    1. Susan Avatar

Diana – the Department of Transportation publishes a form that is accepted by all US-based commercial airlines that must be submitted to the airline more than 48 hours prior to departure. You can see the requirements that the airlines use on this form. https://www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/2024-09/Service%20Animal%20-%20Air%20Transportation%20Form%20FINAL%209.20.24.pdf.
