Where from shall I get the health certificate, please clarify

    1. Susan Avatar

Fatima – if your country of origin is the United Kingdom, then you will need to visit an Official Veterinarian (OV) in the UK for an Export Health Certificate. If you are traveling to an EU Member State, your pet dog or cat will need an Animal Health Certificate, also issued by an OV. We are not sure where your pet is traveling to, but you can find pet import requirements for over 200 countries here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/.

      Hallo,

Hi, and thank you for this detailed article.

Could you please help me understand one thing? I am from a non-EU country, and so is my dog. We are currently in the UK and used an AHC (Animal Health Certificate) issued in my country to enter the UK. Our route to the UK was through the Netherlands — we arrived there by plane and then took a ferry to Newcastle.

Now, we plan to return the same way, but with a small difference: the plane will depart from Brussels instead.
When I contacted a local OV (Official Veterinarian) about getting a new AHC, I was informed that I might need two certificates — one for entering the EU and another for traveling from the EU to my final destination country.

However, I checked with my country’s Airport Border Veterinary Inspection, and they said they don’t really require a separate certificate for re-entry.

What is your opinion on this?
Do I really need two AHCs?
If I make only one certificate for entering the EU, will I be allowed to board the plane in Brussels with it?

    1. Susan Avatar

Denis – assuming you are currently in the UK (as you say), you will need an OV to issue an Animal Health Certificate to leave the UK and enter Belgium. You will also need a health certificate for your home country as well, assuming that it is not an EU Member State. If we did not understand your question correctly, please email info@pettravel.com for further clarification.

        Yes, you understood it correctly.
It feels a bit odd to me that I need a separate certificate just to come back home, so I was in denial at first before accepting it.
        Thank you for clarifying this.

I am traveling from California to Alaska, throught Canada. What do I need for my yellow lab that is service dog in training?

      1. Susan Avatar

Julie – you will need proof of your dog’s microchip, proof that your dog was vaccinated in the US (Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination and Microchip Form) and a health certificate issued with a number (not downloaded from the internet). Your dog must be at least 6 months of age and healthy.

Hi! I am traveling from Florida to Costa Rica with my dog and cat. I have their most recent vaccine records and was planning to get a health certificate in tx before I cross into Mexico because I heard I only have 14 days to get there once I rcv the endorsements. Am I doing this right? Do I need to start here in Florida? There’s just so much info to get thru and I’m not sure.

    1. Susan Avatar

Robyn – it appears that you are traveling by car to Costa Rica. If yes, then Mexico will be your first country to enter. Health certificates are great but not required to enter Mexico. What is required is proof of a parasite treatment. You can find requirements for importing a dog and cat to Mexico here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/mexico-pet-import-requirements/. Know that all countries have their own requirements and one health certificate is not sufficient to get you to Costa Rica by car. You may want to review requirements for all countries you will be entering here: https://www.pettravel.com/information/pet-passports/.

Can you please clarify what an Airline Health Certificate is? I will be travelling from South Korea to Amsterdam.
I have the EU AHC, but not sure about this other document that seems to be required – where do I obtain this?
    Thank you!

    1. Susan Avatar

Amy – the airline veterinary certificate is uitilized generally for pets flying as air cargo where the validity of the destination country health certificate is more than 10 days. In your case, the airline should accept your endorsed EU Health Certificate in lieu of an airline veterinary certificate.

I’m traveling from Newark to Mexico City on United with 2 cats. Mexico no longer requires a health certificate but do I need one when I check in with United? Their website says yes when I call they say no.

    1. Susan Avatar

Hello Lois – according to United’s pet policies: “We require rabies and health certificates for dogs and cats traveling internationally on United. The rabies vaccinations must be completed at least 28 days before travel for both dogs and cats. This applies for all international travel, to and from the United States.” We do not see an exemption for Mexico.

Im travelling from Canada to Mexico with my 7kg dog. What do I need to have ready besides the certificate from the vet?

    1. Susan Avatar

Carolyn – your dog must have proof of parasite treatments administered by a licensed veterinarian when entering Mexico. CFIA endorsement is not required; however the veterinarian should sign and stamp the treatments. You should also verify with your airline what their requirements are.

Hi, I’m traveling from Buenos Aires to JFK New York. Is the certificate issued by the Argentinian veterinarian enough? My dog has the microchip and we vaccinated him against rabie after. Is the laboratory test required 30 days before the flight? Thanks

    1. Susan Avatar

Ornella – as Argentina is not classified by the United States as a high-rabies country, your pet can enter the US at any port. No rabies titer test is required.

Hi! I am traveling from NY to Uruguay with my dog and I am already working with the vet to get the Health Certificate for Uruguay. We have a stopover in Brazil (only transit for a couple of hours), do we need any certificate or paperwork for Brazil too?

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

    1. Susan Avatar

Maria – if you are flying in and out of Brazil on the same airline, then another health certificate is not required. If yes, then you will need to clear customs to recheck your dog on the next airline.

    Hi,

Plan to travel to Hungary with 1 cat from England. Apart from the health certificate and rabies vaccination do we need any other form and/or vaccination to provide?
Thank you for your answer in advance

    1. Susan Avatar

Adrienn – your cat will need an Animal Health Certificate issued by an Official Veterinarian in the UK prior to leaving. It is valid for 4 months or until your cat’s rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first.

When I have all documents in order to travel to Panama with my yellow lab, what is the process there when I want to leave back for Canada 3 months later.

    1. Susan Avatar

Bobbie – your dog will need proof of current rabies vaccination and a health certificate when leaving Panama for Canada.
