    Re: pet discussion

Owning a pet is an individual decision. It works for many people, but for some, it doesn't. Pet ownership has proven to improve people's lives, enhance children's development and encourage responsibility. But many people are out of the home a lot and cannot provide the attention that pets need.

The animal serves people's need to cherish, love and fight boredom. But this is really a distressing reason for keeping a pet. ... Pets make socializing with others easier. People are more inclined to start a conversation when they can focus their attention on the animal in a moment of silence

Pets are playful beings in the house as they keep everybody, young and old, happy in the house. With pets at home, you always feel attached to your house, no matter where you are.

Many elderly people for instance, like having a dog instead of being all alone at home. This is the animal is a replacement for normal human contact, something that apparently is too much to summon in our individualistic society.

A pet keeps it's owner company, it ensures you're not lonely and taking care of it takes the boredom away especially for elderly people. In some cases pets have become an integral part of the family, for instance I had a dog who knew to bring in the paper on a daily basis and who pushed me to take it on walks every evening. That served as my own way of exercising as well back then. So indirectly a pet is just another member of the family, just not human.
