  • Tortoise to Okinawa, Japan

    Hi Friends,

My husband and I are moving to Okinawa, Japan in the next few months. We have a 6 year old Russian Tortoise (a small one, about the size of a your hand, less than 5 lbs.) that we are trying to bring with us. We are assuming we are flying with AMC (Air Mobility Command). I cannot find any information about what paperwork needs to be completed in order for him to first, enter Japan and second, can he fly with us or does he need to be shipped?

Any information you have on this subject would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Marissa

    Re: Tortoise to Okinawa, Japan

Hello Marissa - you will need to send an inquiry to the Animal Quarantine Service in Japan to find out requirements to import your turtle. You can contact them here: https://www.contactus.maff.go.jp/j/aqs/form/d5db.html As for your airline, AMC only accepts cats and dogs, so your tortoise would need to fly as air cargo on another airline that serves your entire route. You would need to contact the cargo department of that airline. You will also need to verify that your tortoise is not protected under CITES regulations.
