  1. What are we the documentation requirements for flying a ten week old puppy from the US to Mexico?

  2. Pamela – we are not aware of any US-based airline that flies this route that will accept Service Dogs in training except Allegiant. Get your Lab acclimated to its crate. It should consider it a “safe place.” Be careful about sedation. Many airlines will not take a pet in the cargo hold that has been sedated.

  3. I would like to fly from Orlando, FL to Sacramento, CA in Nov.2018 with my year old labrador. 75 pounds. Certified service dog in training, but SW Airlines won’t let him on board until he is fully trained. So putting him in a crate in cargo is only option — but SW Airlines doesn’t do that. Another airlines will?? I have medication from the vet so he will rest. He will be crated for at least 8 hours. Not happy about that but don’t know what else to do.

  4. Akos – absolutely not out of the ordinary for a man to travel with a cat. We get questions all the time from men traveling with cats.

  5. Hey! I’d like to travel from BUD to LAX in december with my cat! What do you think is it suspicious/weird if a single man travel with a cat? I don’t want any trouble with the tsa. I’m going to my friend for Christmas

    Thanks Akos

  6. Jirapha – you need to contact your airline to confirm they will hold your dog in Incheon. Four hours is a long time to hold an animal traveling as checked baggage. Ask also what care they can provide for your dog during the layover. They should know about the transit permit. Your dog in the cabin will wait with you in the secure area of the terminal until you board the next flight. No permit should be required.

  7. Hi!

I will be flying from JFK – BKK with a 4hour layover in Incheon, South Korea. One dog in cabin and one dog in cargo. Do I need to fill out any forms for the layover for any of the dogs? I can’t seem to find any information about this. Thank you!

  9. Jacqui – Portugal does permit the import of the following dog breeds for non-commercial purposes from countries outside the EU; however, upon entering Portugal, pet owners must sign a Statement of Responsibility for dogs staying for less than 4 months and a Notification document for dogs intending to reside in Portugal: Brazilian Fila, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Japenese Tosa Inu and Pit Bull Terrier. These breeds should be neutered or spayed before importing to Portugal.

A Bull Terrier is a related breed and may or may not be included in the Pit Bull Terrier category although the shape of the head tells the story. At worst, you will need to sign a liability statement. If you have a proof of pedigree, that would be relevant.

  10. Hi. I see you answer very promptly. Thank you. I see there are banned breeds in Portugal. Is an ENGLISH bull terrier allowed to enter Portugal? He is very placid and has been neutered.

  11. HS – the flight is risky for an English Bulldog because of their breathing issues. You may need to consider using a major airline out of a major airport to keep your route non-stop and find an airline that will fly your dog. Alitalia may accept it and you can also try Finnair. Contact their cargo departments if the reservation agent refuses. We wish we could offer an easy solution, but owners of this breed will struggle with transport options.

  12. Hi,
Do you know any possibility to moving back to Japan from Italy with 8years old English bulldog?
We checked Queen Elizabeth ferry (only this ferry accept to take my dog but only from UK to Newyork…), Siberian train(not accept dog), flight (possible from Paris to Japan and use ANA). So only flight option is available to take English bulldog. But my vet told me the flight is too risky…
    Please please help me.

  13. Cheryl – if you are flying in and out of a country on the same airline, and, if your cat is traveling in the cargo hold, the layover is around 2-3 hours, then the airline will transit your cat through the country and it does not need to conform to the import regulations of the layover country. If your cat is traveling in the cabin, you will stay in the secure area of the airport until you board your next flight. This is what you will want to do to avoid claiming and rechecking your cat.

The regulations to enter any country in the UK or EU involve first microchipping, then vaccinating for rabies, waiting 30 days, then having a rabies titer test, then waiting 3 months. So, you can see how important it is to stay with the same airline company, at least until you get to the United States.

  14. Hello, we are moving to the US from Egypt and will be bringing a small, one year old cat. There are no direct flights from Cairo to Houston, and so we will have to connect somewhere in the EU or UK. Can you tell me if the full vaccination/rabies/quarantine rules apply when simply transiting through an EU country? Egypt is listed as a high-rabies country. Our cat has had her rabies shot months ago, and was just microchipped this week. I just read that the microchip needed to come first (for entry into France or Germany). Am I understanding these rules correctly? I do have time to get another rabies shot and allow 30 days afterwards, but just barely. Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

  15. Angela – unless they are service or emotional support animals, all dogs and cats must be under the seat, especially during takeoff and landing. We do not know of an airline that will allow you to purchase an extra seat for your pet on an international flight.
    Phil

  16. Does anyone know if you can purchase a business class ticket (on airlines where pets can travel in the cabin) and have the pet dog travel on the seat in its container next to you rather than on the floor? we are travelling to America from UK

  17. Kelsey – Portugal does not require spaying or neutering for dogs entering the country. Local dangerous dog ordinances should be considered if your dog is one of the identified breeds: Brazilian Fila, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Japenese Tosa Inu and Pit Bull Terrier.

  18. Hello,
Just wondering if my dog has to be spayed to travel internationally from Canada to Portugal ?

  19. Diana – you can look into a pet friendly ferry, but you will still need to get your dog to the EU by plane. We know of no commercial vessel that will transport pets other than the Queen Mary 2 from New York to England.
    Jason

  20. Hi

Can you help me. I am moving back to the UK from South Africa and want to take my dog with me. I understand that i need him microchipped and vacinated
etc and i am in the process now of waiting to test him for rabies which will be done in March. I have a border collie and he is really sensitive to noise so im really worried about sending him to the uk on a plane. I was wondering if it is possible to do this by boat and then we would be together too???

Please could you give me any advice if this is possible and how and what the cost would be?

    Warmest regards

    Diana

  21. Hi, whats the best way to travel from Phuket to Paris or Germany or Amsterdam, with my french bull dog

  22. Hello Theresa, Niamh and Doodles – you can find requirements to import your pup to Ireland here with links to further instructions and forms if you need them: http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/Ireland.cfm. Note that the rabies titer test in step #3 will be required.

Aer Lingus may require that an agent book the trip; you will need to check that. No matter what airline you choose, your pup will need to travel as air cargo into Ireland.
    Susan

  23. Hi

    Thanking you in advance
    Theresa..Niamh and Doodles Healy

  24. Merle – as it appears that you are staying on Cathay Pacific in and out of Hong Kong, your pet will not need to conform to HK regulations. A transit permit will be needed if your pet is traveling in the cargo hold.
    Phil
