Fredericksburg is a history lovers delight. There is probably no other city that brings together so closely the two most significant events in American history, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Pets are welcome on the grounds of most historic parks as long as they are leashed and well behaved.

Located at the edge of Virginia's Tidewater midway between Washington and Richmond, Fredericksburg was the haunt of manyFredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park Revolutionary luminaries. Fredericksburg survived the battles and now sports a 40 block historic area of 18th and 19th century buildings. Its quaint atmosphere makes it a popular weekend getaway for Washington and the entire mid-Atlantic; and it's a natural base for exploring Virginia's rich history.

Four battlefields in the Fredericksburg area (Fredericksburg Battlefield, Chancellorsville Battlefield, Wilderness Battlefield and Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield) comprise the world's largest military monument: the 9,000-acre Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.

The office was one of several outbuildings on Thomas C. Chandler's 740-acre plantation named "Fairfield." Although the Chandler house burned at some point after the Civil War, the plantation building has been restored and looks today very similiar to what it looked like then.

Ferry Farm is the boyhood home of George Washington. His father moved the family here in 1738. Visitors are welcome to tour the 80+ acrea of property and learn more about the Washington family through exibits in the Visitor Center. George Washington Ferry Farm courtesy of

This beautiful, Georgian-style mansion reflects the pre-Revolutionary War wealth and status of the Fredericksburg merchant, Fielding Lewis, the husband of Betty Washington Lewis, George Washington's sister. Just restored to its 1775 appearance, this mansion is worth the guided tour. Well behaved pets, on leashes, are allowed on the grounds.
