  1. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to bring a dog who I adopted while traveling in Jamaica. I don’t know how to go about getting the dog from there to here in the States.

  2. Since I do not know what country you are traveling from on your trip to Morocco it is difficult for me to advise you of the procedure for your pet to enter that country. However, in most cases quarantine can be avoided. I cannot answer your question about the pet traveling in the cabin for the same reason. I need to know where you are traveling from and the name of the airline as each airline has their individual pet policy for pets traveling in the cabin, but some of them do allow it.

  3. I will travel to marakesh and I would like to ask you if you know what happens with the dogs there.I have a handicapped maltese 5 kilos .Will I be able to take it with me in the plane?I can not leave him alone in the luggage because as I said before he is paralysed.

  4. There are no specific requirements to take your pet out of Peru. If you are flying there is a Sensa office at the airport and they may charge you a small fee. As long as you have the proper documents to travel to Bolivia you should be fine.

Thank you for your reply of 19 February to my question about Peru (below). I will download the forms.

Only one doubt remains – will the Peruvian authorities require any Peruvian documentation to take the dog out of Peru the same day he arrives or the following day (we will have cleared customs and left the airport). If so, will I need to stay in Peru to complete that, or can I have BOlivian documents legalised by the Peruvian Embassy in BOlivia, or undergo a check/inspection at the airport?

    Thanks again – great service.

You will need the documents to enter Peru as you will need to claim your pet on arrival in that country and then later check it as manifested cargo on the flight to the UK. Be sure the airline you are using out of Peru is authorized to take pets into the UK, not all airlines are so authorized. The rules for taking your pet into the UK are the same from either Bolivia or Peru so you can use the same documents which include the microchip, rabies vaccination, blood titer test, annex II veterinary certificate and the tapeworm treatment. If you need more detailed information and all of the forms including the list of authorized airlines they are available here: https://www.pettravelstore.com/pet-passport-united-kingdom/

I will be travelling from Bolivia to the UK with my dog in cargo. Although I am clear on entry requirments for the UK, the journey involves an 11 hour layover in Lima, Peru. To take the dog out of the airport for the day, do I have to import him int Peru? And can I then use Bolivian documents to take the dog from Peru later that evening?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

  6. Mariya – the need for documentation when you have a layover in a country along your route is based on several factors. The first one is whether you are transferring airlines or staying on the same airline and just changing planes. The second is whether your pet is traveling with you in the cabin, as checked baggage or as cargo. If you are changing airlines, most likely you will need documents because the airlines do not interline pets and you will have to claim your pet and clear customs. If your pet is with you in the cabin, you will most likely need to clear customs to get to your next flight.

If you are not changing airlines, just airplanes, and your pet is traveling with you as checked baggage, then they will hold your pet in a secure area for up to 2 hours and reload them on the next plane without asking you to claim and recheck them. If your pet is traveling as unaccompanied in cargo, they will hold them a bit longer, generally.

I do not know how your pet is traveling, but hopefully one of these scenarios applies.

  7. And if I will have a transitional stop somewhere in Europe (non-direct flight) do I need to bring documents which that country required if I am going just to stay in airport?

  8. Hello. I am traveling from Ukraine to the USA, FL. What documents do I need? Will my dog be quarantined?

  9. Hello Stephanie – in order to bring a pet to Ecuador, it must have a current rabies vaccination issued at least 30 days prior to entry. Also, a USDA accredited vet must complete a health certificate to be endorsed by your state USDA veterinarian within 10 days of travel. Your vet must also state in writing that your pet is free of internal and external parasites very shortly prior to travel. You can find the complete instructions and all forms required for taking a pet to Ecuador here and they can be emailed to you: http://www.pettravelstore.com/pet-passport-ecuador/

  10. Hello Susanne – the Netherlands require that your pet be microchipped with a 15 digit ISO microchip, then vaccinated (in that order) at least 21 days prior to entering the Netherlands. If your pet was microchipped before vaccinated, that is OK, but if not, then your vet must insert the chip, then re-vaccinate. The process can be done on the same day.

Within 10 days of travel, an Annex II form for the Netherlands must be completed by a USDA accredited veterinarian (ask your vet if they are USDA accredited) and sent to your state USDA office for endorsement.

Your pet may need a health certificate to travel as checked baggage. Your vet can complete that within 10 days of travel if you need it.
You can find instructions and forms for taking a pet to the Netherlands here if you need them: http://www.pettravelstore.com/pet-passport-netherlands/

You will be able to return to the United States with your documentation unless the airline will require the health certificate to be issued within 10 days of travel.

  11. Good afternoon,
We intend to fly with a dog (just a bit too big for the cabin) from the US to the Netherlands and back three weeks later. He just got all the rabies shots. What else would he need when he was out of the country and is coming back?
    Thank you

  12. I’m thinking of retiring to Ecuador, I know that I can bring in my pets (and what the requirements are) and is there a limit to how many one can bring into the country? I’d heard from a realtor that there was a limit of 2, and since I have 3 (2 cats and a dog) that will present a problem. Thanks for your reply.

  13. Hello, we are travelling to Thailand with our chihuahua, who has all necessary documentation and shots, including a rabies blood test, from Netherlands, what are the requirements? Will our dog have to go through a quarantine in Thailand? Thank you

  14. Dorothea – returning to Japan will be more complicated than bringing your pet to the US. There is a series of two rabies vaccinations your pet must have at least 30 days apart after being microchipped and then a Blood Titer Test is administered. The results of the BTT should be received at least 180 days prior to entry and there must be no lapse in vaccination. Japan will also require an endorsed health certificate. Your must also notify the Animal Quarantine Station within 40 days of your arrival. If you meet all of the requirements, your pet is subject to an inspection and can be held for up to 12 hours. If you do not, then your pet will be quarantined for 180 days. You can find forms and instructions for taking your pet to Japan here and they can be emailed to you: http://www.pettravelstore.com/pet-passport-japan/

  15. Sorry, one additional thing: we will return to Japan after three weeks.
What is required in that direction?

    Thanks Dorothea

  16. In-cabin-flight with a toy-poodle from Tokyo,Japan to Portland,OR,USA

    Will my pet be quarantined?
What vaccinations does my pet need?
Will my pet need a passport?

    Thank you in advance… Dorothea

  17. You will need a screwworm test to enter the US, but your veterinarian can do that shortly prior to travel. The United States has no requirements that pets enter in the cargo hold, so it would be up to the airline that you choose whether your pet could travel in the cabin. Be sure and stay on the same airline the entire trip because you don’t want to have to clear customs in any country along the way.
