Pets are on the move. More than 2 million pets are transported each year in the United States according to US Department of Transportation. Although the majority of animals that are transported are dogs and cats, exotic animals can be transported as well. It’s important to realize that every airline sets their own regulations on what pets, breeds and types they are willing to transport. Below is a list of airlines you might want to consider next time you travel with an exotic animal.
Continental: Continental is known for their famous “PetSafe” program and sets the industry standard in pet airline travel. Unfortunately they’re not as catering to exotic animals. Continental limits their welcome to only dogs, cats, rabbits and household birds. Guinea pigs, rats and any type of reptiles are not permitted. Continental will transport pets unaccompanied.
Delta: Delta is a very pet-friendly airline with a variety of options for different animals. Delta welcomes passengers to carry dogs, cats, and household birds in cabin permitting their size. Also, between September 16th and May 14th they will transport dogs, cats, household birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and most reptiles, amphibians and fish via cargo. Pets must be in an airline approved crate or carrier. As a bonus Delta will transport two pets of the same type in one kennel as long as they meet the requirements for acceptance. Delta also transports pets unaccompanied.
Frontier: Frontier is known for their laid back regulations and relatively inexpensive transport fees. They allow dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters to travel in cabin (with the appropriate carrier) for $75 one way. They will also transport all these animals’ via cargo for $150 a way. Only dogs and cats will be transported internationally. They are also one of the few airlines left that will transport bulldog breeds.
United: United Air limits in-cabin travel to dogs, cats and household birds however; they will transport these pets and guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits in the cargo compartment. The prices are $125 (in cabin) and $250-$500 (cargo) respectively. United also transports pets unaccompanied.
WestJet: Westjet Airline is one of the most “exotic pet friendly” airlines inside the US. For only $50 (for both in cabin and cargo) they will transport cats, dogs, rabbits, birds (not just household), chinchillas, guinea pigs, and hedgehogs. The only downside to WestJet is their flight selection is somewhat limited especially in the central US.
It’s important to remember that each airline makes its own rules for the import of birds and exotic pets. On top of the airlines, every country (beside the EU) makes their own rules regarding the various types of pets allowed to enter the country. Hi thanks a lot for your answer !
Just a last question!
I will need a cage of transportation for my rat and I have found this : http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?act=url&depth=1&hl=fr&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.fr&sl=en&tl=fr&twu=1&u=http://pettravelstore.com/products/Pet-Crate-Small.html&usg=ALkJrhjiFhjIm3NmcmrqiCxJ3QwJFsL3RQ
It’s ok for a rat? I need also to buy accesoiries for the flight? and do you ship to France? What are the deadlines for France?
Thanks again for your help…
Amandine
Hello – Your pet can travel as checked baggage out of the UK as long as your airlines will allow it. British Airlines will not. You can try Aegean Airlines or Japan Airlines as they have direct flights. Turkish Airlines has one quick stop in Istanbul. Your rabbit will be transferred by the airlines. Your pet rabbit will need a veterinary certificate for Greece issued within 10 days of travel to return to Greece. You can find instructions and the form here if you need it. It can be emailed to you: http://www.pettravelstore.com/products/Pet-Passport-Greece.html.
Susan
Your pet rat can travel as checked baggage on many airlines flying to the US or Canada from France (Air France being one). You should have a health certificate issued by your veterinarian within 10 days of travel and a veterinary certificate from the US or Canada. You can find them here: http://www.pettravelstore.com/categories/Pet-Passports/.
Susan

HI! IM FROM GREECE AND IN A FEW MONTHS I WILL GO TO ENGLAND TO BUY A RABBIT,WHAT AIRLINES SHOULD I TAKE TO GO BACK IN GREECE WITH A PET RABBIT?
What is the situation with KLM and rabbits? I have read several conflicting reports on different sites on whether they are allowed at all or not. Does KLM allow rabbits in cargo?
RESPONSE
KLM does accept pet rabbits as air cargo who have the proper documents for the country they are traveling to and who are traveling in an IATA compliant pet crate. You must call the air cargo office to make arrangements for their transportation – it cannot be done online.
Jerry
Most airlines will transport reptiles as cargo. You will need to find an airline that serves both cities and the most direct route possible and contact their cargo department. The tricky part is the crate and providing the warmth that your pet will need. Discuss this with the airlines. There are also websites that specialize in transporting reptiles which you may want to contact.
Susan
Hello,
My husband and I recently have found out that he has Leukemia and will need an Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant and leading up to the transplant he cannot be around Reptiles! I have a Bearded Dragon that I am completely attached to and my mother has offered to take him until my husbands immune system is back up and running. Problem is that she lives in WA state and I live in NY. How can I get my Reptile safely to her via Airline or otherwise? Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance!
Both Delta and United will accept your pets as long as they travel in the cargo hold as checked baggage. As they are a chewing animal, you will need to check with the airline for crate requirements. There will most likely be requirements that the vents be covered with a wire mesh. Your kitten should be able to travel with you in the cabin in an airline compliant carrier. Also, the airlines will need a health certificate completed by your veterinarian stating that they are in good health and free of any disease.
Susan
Hello, I have four female rats that I am planning on taking with me when I move from Rhode Island to Texas. I have yet to find any information on how to go about doing this or how much it will cost. I am also having trouble finding a suitable carrier for them. I also have a 6 month old kitten I’m taking with me. I am planning on using either Delta or United Airlines.
There is not a problem bringing your busies into the US. We have no information on bringing bunnies to Bolivia. We are trying to contact the Embassy and would suggest that you try as well.
Susan

I am shortly moving to Italy and I would like to bring my two captive-bred chinchillas with me. I’m having trouble finding what documentation they need in order to be exported out of the US and through Italian customs.
RESPONSE
There are no regulaions or requirements for bringing Chinchillas into Italy.
Jerry
I’m looking at moving from Oklahoma to Ontario, and am planning on bringing my snakes with me. I have a rat snake, two ball pythons, and a red tail boa. Which airline is going to be snake friendly, due to them needing warmer temperatures?
RESPONSE
No airline is going to accept them in the cabin of the aircraft. However this time of year the temperature should not be a problem. I suggest you call the air cargo department of the airline you are flying to make the arrangements. They can still be on the same flight that you are traveling on. You must call their air cargo department, the arrangements cannot be made online.
Jerry
Hi, I recently bought two koi fish while staying in Dubai, I will be leaving here in mid December to return to Atlanta. Will they allow me to bring my fish into the states?
RESPONSE
There will be no objection to bringing them into the US. You will however need to speak with the airline you are flying to see if they will transport them.
Jerry
I’m going to India from Ottawa, Canada for about 2 months.

It would depend on the airline pet policy as to whether your beta can travel with you in the cabin. You should inquire to the airline you choose.
Susan
i have a sugar glider and im travelling to colombia in two months.Does any one know what airline accepts them because im staying there for a month i have to take him. im from florida.
RESPONSE
I am not aware of any US flagged airline that will accept Sugar Gliders in the cabin of the aircraft however most of them will accept them as checked baggage. You need to call the reservations office of the airline you are flying to confirm this. You might find a foriegn flagged airline such as LAN that would accept them in the cabin – the foriegn airlines operate under different rules.
Jerry
I will be traveling to Mexico from the US in February. I have 3 betta fish I wanna take with me, and would like to know if I can take them on board. Thanks.
RESPONSE
Mexico does not restrict their entry but you will need to call the airlines reservations office to see if they will accept them on board the aircraft.
Jerry
Hello,
I have a pet rabbit that is approx. 6 months old and less than 1 pound that I need to get from Mexico to United States of America. I have been in contact with United Airlines and the first person I spoke with said that it was all right to fly my rabbit as a carry-on item, however, the second person I spoke with said that rabbits are not accepted pets to be flown by respective airline. I would really appreciate any information you could give me regarding sending my rabbit. I do not need to be able to fly with my rabbit, I can send him by himself and pick him up separately if that is possible. Thank you.
RESPONSE: United Airlines informed us that they do not allow pets in the cabin on international flights. However, they will transport your rabbit under their Pet Safe program in the cargo hold. You will need to contact them for details: 1-800-575-3335 or 1-832-235-1541 or petsafe@united.com.

Hi, I my kids have two 3 inches wood turtles, e want to travel from Nicaragua to Las Vegas, my kids got really attached to their pets and dont want to leave them. It’s been a nightmare trying to figure out how to introduce them in US without problems in customs. United is not giving to much info, just a lot of numbers tht keep directing me somewhere else, it seem nobody know how or what to do. If any body has any info in who i can contact or how to do to take my kids ets with us, I will appreciate a lot.
Thank you.
RESPONSE
The US does not restrict the import of small turtles. Your only challange is to find an airline that will accept them on board.
Jerry
I am flying my rabbit from Seoul to Orlando, Florida. He has had all his shots and will be getting the required health certificate. I’m just wondering if there are any regulations bringing rabbits in that are specific to Florida? I heard that each state has different rules to bring pets in..and I don’t know where to look for this…
Also when going through security are they going to require me to take my rabbit out of his carrier? He doesn’t like being held at all!! Do security check points normally have rooms that I could hold my rabbit in until the bag goes through? Thank you!!
RESPONSE
There are no special requirements for bringing pets into Florida. You only go through US immigration on arrival, there is no State of Florida entry procedure. Not all airports have private rooms, In my travels I have found about half of them do and I have no knowledge of Seoul’s airport. You might want to check with them. At some point the rabbit has to come out of the carrier either before you go through the XRay or in the private room. If there is a private room you take the pet out of the carrier, they then take the carrier back to XRay and bring it back to you to put the rabbit back in it.
I am curious as to what airline has agreed to carry the rabbit in the cabin of the aircraft.
Jerry
Hello, I moved to Washington from Colorado. I left my North American Box Turtle in Colorado. I would like to ship him here. My mother is planning to visit soon and I was wondering which airlines she could take my turtle on with her? I cant seem to find any. Thank you
RESPONSE: Does Frontier serve your route? They are the most lenient when it comes to allowing different types of pets in the cabin. Although United does not publicize that they will accept turtles in the cabin, I would call to inquire.
Susan
Hello I am looking to purchase a Russian Desert Tortoise in the United States (California to be exact) and I live in Mexico but since I work in Alaska I going to do a joint ownership with a friend who lives in California but I would like to be able to take my new tortoise with me when I go to Mexico and return it to my friend when I go to work in Alaska what should I do?
Once again I have yet to purchase the Tortoise and am looking to find out more info about it traveling with me before I make a final decision!
RESPONSE
Neither the US nor Mexico ban the import of a Tortoise. However you will need to check with an airline that flies between the two cities to make sure they will accept it for transportation as checked baggage. You must call the airline reservations office, it cannot be done online.
Jerry
Hi i am looking to move from Scotland to South Africa soon and want to take my lovely pet rabbit. what is the best (and fairest way for him) to be transported and will i need special vaccinations?
thanks
RESPONSE
South Africa does not publish information relating to the import of rabbits. I suggest you contact them for the information you need regarding innoculations and import permits.
SandraDAC@daff.gov.za
Your pet will travel as checked baggage in an IATA compliant pet crate. You must find an airline that will take your pet all the way to the destination as it cannot change airlines enroute.
You will find the IATA compliant pet crates here:

Jerry
Hi i have my first guinea pig and we are very attach, im moving from Alaska to Puerto Rico and dont wanna let her go. I wanna really take her with me ill be flying by AAirlanes. What are my options??
RESPONSE: Your pet must fly American Airlines Cargo so you will need to contact them to make a reservation. (800-227-4622 or LiveAnimals.Cargo@aa.com). They will give you the requirements as far as a health certificate and crate requirements. We would suggest that you have your vet issue a certificate stating that your guinea pig is healthy and free of disease.
Susan
Hello,
I will be moving from the UK back to the US in late September and I am planning on bringing my two Guinea Pigs with me. I know I can’t bring them as a carry on, but was wondering if Delta allows them as checked baggage, or if I would have to ship them as cargo.
Thank you!
RESPONSE: it would depend on whether Delta serves your route with a B767 aircraft. If you can work with them and find a route that is not served by this plane, Delta should be able to assist.
Susan
Hello, I have a pet rat and I was planning on traveling back to Idaho from California on Delta and I was wondering how much it would cost to bring her and if I can.
RESPONSE
Delta will not accept it in the cabin of the aircraft but normally will accept it as checked baggage if it is in the proper type of IATA compliant pet crate. The cost is $200.00.
You must call Delta reservations to make a booking for the animal to travel as checked baggage. You can find IATA compliant pet crates here – you would need the small size.

Thanks for the info… Do you know what kind of bedding would be best for a hatchling ball python? There are so many choices, I don’t know what is best to use.
RESPONSE: Shredded newspaper wouldne best.

Hi,
Im travelling to Mexico soon and I was wondering if there is any problem with me travelling with my rabbit. Ive travelled with my dogs before to the same city in Mexico and never had a problem but im scared that once I get there i will have a problem with the rabbit. Is there anything I should know besides health certificates?
Thanks!
RESPONSE
Mexico has not posted any regulations regarding the import of rabbits but I am reasonably certain that all you need is a certificate of good health. Since rabbits can carry rabies it might be prudent to have it vaccinated for rabies.
Jerry
Hello.. I recently got two 5 inch mini turtles in Alabama and they are in a little fish task that would fit on my lap… I would like to take them back to Montana with
Me on united Airlines. Would they let me take them and hold them in my lap?
RESPONSE
United does not publish any rules on the transport of mini turtles. It will likely be at the descretion of the flight attendant. I would suggest finding a way to seal the tank and carrying them on board in your carry on which will go under the seat. I doubt that any one would notice or mind that you had the package in your lap during the flight. Be sure to take the container with the turtles out of your carry on when you go through security.
Jerry
We are planning on emigrating to the UK and currently live in the US. I am British and my husband is American. We have a 6 month old rabbit and wanted to take him along with us as our children would be so disappointed to leave him behind. Can you give me any information on how to go about doing this? Can they fly with us? Will flying harm the animal? Does the animal have to be quarantined at all. I am at a loss at how I would go about looking into this kind of information and hoping you can shed some light on it for me. Thanks,
RESPONSE
At the present time the UK does not allow the import of rabbits from the US. They do allow the import of rabbits from other EU countries.
Jerry
I have two Sugar Gliders that pass as my children, I plan on travelling from Florida, USA to Vladivostok, Russia. The maximum time I will be over there is 15 days and leaving them behind is not an option. Is anyone aware of the importation laws and regulations as well as an airline that allows gliders in the cabin (it could potentially be a 36 hour flight). I need an airline that allows exotic pets aboard and would let me have them in the cabin. i appreciate any help.
RESPONSE
There are no regulations that would keep you from taking the pets to Russia and returning to the United States. None of the American flagged carriers will allow them in cabin but you may have better luck with one of the foriegn airlines as their rules are not normally as strict. I am sorry I cannot point you to a specific airline, you will need to call them.
Jerry
Hello, i am planing to send my rabbit to Hong Kong from Seattle. Do any cargo have a nonstop flight to Hong Kong from Seattle? Is that ok to rabbits travel by cargo?
Thanks
Lee
RESPONSE: I can find no direct flight from Seattle to Homg Kong. Your most sensible route would be through SFO (San Francisco). Stay on the same airline the entire trip. There are several carriers that can accommodate you.
Susan
Hello, I m traveling on Sunday from Greece to Denmark with my dog and cat BUT my hen just had chicks….I would love to be able to take one with us but I have no idea what regulations say and if its allowed or what is needed. Also in the future I would like to take our garden turtle. Can you give me some information as I wasn’t able to find anything related to these particular pets and Denmark? Thank you so much.
RESPONSE
Denmark does not publish information on the import of chicks but they are normally reluctant to allow the import of birds of any type without some type of quarantine. I suggest your best source of information is the Danish Embassy.
Jerry
Hello! I’m moving at the end of this month from Pennsylvania to Las Vegas, Nevada to live in an apartment because of a new job. I currently have 5 rats, 2males in one cage, 1 female in her own cage (cagemate no longer with us) and 2 females in another cage…three cages. I’m terrified to fly with them because I don’t want them hurt or lost. It’s only a five hour flight one way. Are their airlines that transport rats? I don’t see too many specifics about it up there! Thanks!
RESPONSE: your pets need to travel in an IPATA compliant pet crate in the cargo department of the airplane which is temperature controlled and pressurized like the cabin. I would suggest a crate with metal over the ventilation holes such as PetMate crates: http://www.pettravelstore.com/petmate-airline-cargo-crate-small/. You should also get a good health certificate from your veterinarian.
You will need to have an airline that serves the entire route as airlines do not interline pets. You will need to find an airline that will accept your pets in cargo due to the temperatures. The airlines will not accept pets in cargo when the temperatures exceed 85 degrees. Delta and United have programs in place to deal with this, but you will have to ask them if your origination airport participates in their program.
Susan
Hello!
This is a very helpfull website.
I’m from Portugal, and I’ll be going to UK in July, I have a small guinea pig, and I was wondering, how can I take him by flight? What documentation or something else is needed? Can you help me?
Thanks a lot
Joana
RESPONSE: Currently, there are no rabies or tapeworm import requirements for guinea pigs transported to the UK from Portugal. Your pet will fly in the cargo hold on an approved airline according to that airline’s policy. A certificate of good health from your veterinarian will be a requirement of the airline.
Susan
I have a micro-mini teacup pig that weighs 3 pounds. I want to travel with him in the continental United States and want to carry him on board in a cat carrier which will fit under the seat in front of me. Will the airlines allow me to do this if I pay for his ticket? I have been told that agricultural animals cannot travel in the cabin. Is this true?
RESPONSE: unfortunately, we are not aware of any airline that will allow a teacup pig in the cabin.

Hi, I will be purchasing a miniature pig from a well known breeder in Cleveland, Texas and they ship by Continental Airlines. They have shipped twice to where I live before(Canada) and for one, the purchaser in Canada needed some permits and for the other, there was nothing required of the purchaser.
I was just wondering if there is any paperwork I need to do on my side to get the piggy safe home?
I live in Vancouver, British Columbia to be extact and I’ve heard of 30 day quarentines. I would hate to have that happen to my new pet.
Thanks
Thank you for your response. Where would I find a professional pet transport agent. Leaving the animals behind is not an option.

I may soon be facing a move to England and I have several pets (3 dogs, 1 cat, 2 chinchillas, one parrot, a short tailed opossum, and one owl). As this will most likely be permanent my animals must come with me. This seems a daunting endeavor so any help would be very appreciated.
RESPONSE
It will be very difficult to arrange and it will be very very expensive to take this group of animals into the UK. I would not suggest you attempt it without the assistance of a professional pet transport agent.
Jerry
Hi I am from UK and will be having a holiday to Philippines. Wish to bring 1-2rabbit(s)as gifts to my family. Do you know airlines I can travel with as check-in baggage. Waiting for the reply from KLM to my query if not permitted I will depend on your answer.
Thanks,
Sally from Norfolk, UK (northeast of England)
RESPONSE
Most airlines transport pet rabbits. You may have better luck making the arrangements with the air cargo department of the airline you are flying. the rabbits must remain on the same airline the entire trip and be transported in an IATA compliant pet crate. they can still travel on the same flight as you are on and in the same special section of the cargo hold. You will just drop them off at a different place at the airport for the flight. The Philippines also requires an import permit. You can find the complete rules and forms for taking animals into the Philippines here and they can be emailed to you:

I want to send my little rooster from Ft lauderdale USA to Armenia Colombia…which airline will take him…will he survive the flight? does he need to be in quarentine upon arrival?
RESPONSE
Your pet would have to fly as air cargo and you need to speak with the air cargo department of an airline that flies direct between the two cities to see if they will accept the pet. You will need a permit to take your bird into Colombia.
Jerry
Hi Everyone,
I had a great experience with Delta. While living in Korea I rescued several animals including 2 rabbits. it was an 11 hour trip from Seoul to the Atlanta. They were fine. To lessen the stress, I made sure to book a NONSTOP flight and probably bugged the flight attendants as I made sure there was precious cargo down below. Just make sure they have dry bedding and some soft old towels etc. they can snuggle/hide in. And mark your crate well!
RESPONSE
Thanks for the update, we apreciate it.
Jerry
I’m trying to find quarantine facilities in the UK for my chinchilla and I’m having no luck – I’ve tried DEFRA and other forums without any success. Do you know of any? My thought was that even a rabbit/guinea pig place might adapt for a chinchilla if I asked them nicely.
RESPONSE
Defra is probably your best choice for information on quarantine facilities in England.
Jerry
Are there any airlines that allow sugar gliders in cabin, and, considering they need warm temperatures and they not pass the acclimatizatio certificate, what is the best airline to fly from the US to the EU
RESPONSE
I am not aware of any airline that allows sugar gliders in the cabin. However animals being carried in cargo are kept in a special section of the cargo hold where the temperature and pressure is the same as in the cabin.
Jerry
Hi, I am travelling to the US from the UK this year and I have to bring my snake with me as I’ll be gone a couple of months. Is Delta the only airline that transports exotic pets? If so: a) do they allow them in the cabin and b) if not do they take good care of their reptilian passengers in regards to temperature and stress-limiting? My little one is, of course, very sensitive to vibrations and change. I’m extremely nervous about this as I have no idea what is involved in flying him out with me. If I didn’t have to do it I wouldn’t, but I’m crazy about the States and would hate to put off visiting for the next 20yrs!
RESPONSE
I do not believe that any airline will allow your snake to travel in the cabin. It is good that Delta has agreed to carry it as checked baggage. The US does not have any requirements regarding the entry of snakes. I do however suggest that you check with DEFRA in the UK regarding bringing the snake back into the UK as I am not sure it is allowed.
Jerry
Anagha,
I have traveled with one of my pet rabbits in the past (multiple times) with no problem, I wouldnt recommend the cargo area because rabbits can get too stressed with the noise. My bunny did surprisingly well, but my flight was short (3 1/2 hrs – 4 hr tops) and we had 1 stop which helped. I made sure to bring her favorite treats along with hay and food, and a blanket(with my scent) to cover the carrier while in the plane. I would give her a small treat at take-off and during the flight to make sure she was ok and she did fine, she even nibbled on hay. I don’t know if she did so well because she was used to traveling by car.I also made sure to have a vets number and emergency vet handy just in case i needed it when i got to my destination. I was just looking to see which airlines allow pet rabbits in cabin and found two (Continental and United), I used to fly delta because they were the only ones that allowed the rabbits in cabin but they don’t anymore.I am relocating and need to bring my two pet rabbits along and the only way to get there is by plane. My personal opinion is that try to find an airline that allow your rabbit in cabin if you must travel with the bunny, but i wouldn’t fly my pets (at least my rabbits) in cargo. If you want more info or more tips you can email me personally (lulyn6944@me.com) and i can help you out.
RESPONSE
Let us know if you find additional airlines that will accept your rabbit in the cabin.
Jerry
hello, i have red eared turtle in russia, and i want to take him to india. he is around 8years and around 20 cm in length.does anyone knows about which airline will allow me to take him with me and about documents?red eared turtle in india as a pet is legal or not?
RESPONSE
India does not have any regulations regarding the import of a pet turtle. I think it will be difficult to find an airline that will accommodate you but the only way to find out isto start calling the airlines reservations office. It canot be done online – you must call hem.
Hello, does anybody have any personal experience traveling with rabbits? How do they do during take-off/landing? Are they miserable during the journey? Also, if the pet is forced to travel by cargo, will the airlines let you take a look at the cargo area to see where they will be kept, set them up in their area so that they are as comfortable as possible in the circumstances, and then have you board the flight? I don’t expect that most of the airline staff is as concerned with my little one’s comfort as I am, so I would really like to be sure I see them settled in well myself.
RESPONSE
Due to security regulations passengers are not allowed into the cargo area. Your pet will travel as checked baggage in an IATA compliant pet crate that you will provide. The airlines do an excellent job of lookinf after their furry passengers and the pet will travel in a section of the cargo hold where the temperature and pressure is the same as in the cabin. You will drop the pet and the carrier off at the ticket counter when you pay for its transportation but will not see it again until you pick it up in the baggage claim area at the destination airport.
