Pet policy Air India

Can my pet fly with me in the cabin? Yes
Can my pet fly with me as checked baggage? Yes

Air India Pet Policy: In-Cabin

If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in Air India pet policy to travel in-cabin, you will need an approved airline pet carrier. The carrier must have a waterproof bottom, have room for your pet to stand up and turn around, must fasten securly and have adequate ventilation.

Pets Allowed: dogs, cats and household birds

Route Restrictions: Pets are not allowed on the Air India flights to and from the United States except for service dogs which must be carried in the cabin. Also, no pets are allowed on flights to London. No birds are permitted as carry on or checked baggage on flights transiting through the Middle East.

Reservations: You must notify Air India that you are traveling with a pet. Reservations cannot be made online.

Carrier Requirements: Maximum soft sided carrier size: 18"x18"x12" (45cm x 45cm x 30cm) Passengers will be subject to normal excess baggage charges. Combined weight of pet and carrier must be less than 11 lbs. (5kg)

Forms Required: Health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination as well as all certificates and forms required for destination country.

Air India Pet Policy: Checked Baggage

If your pet is too large to fit under the seat, it is an animal other than a dog or cat, or if it is a very long flight, Air India may transport your pet in the cargo section of the aircraft according to its regulations. This section of the cargo department has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin.

Pets Allowed: dogs, cats, small birds and other pets

Route Restrictions: see above

Breed Restrictions: Air India urges caution when transporting snub-nosed breeds. It is recommended that these pets are transported in crates one size larger than they normally require.

Weather Restrictions: Pets will be exposed to summer and winter temperatures between the holding area and boarding. Check with the airline for temperature restrictions.

Forms Required: Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian no more than 10 days prior to travel and proof of rabies vaccination. All forms required for your destination country should be attached to the crate.

Crate Requirements: Click here for crate requirements.

India is strict regarding import of animals unless residency papers can be provided. The rule is two pets per family if moving to India. The NOC must be obtained from an agent in India.
Posted on 2013-08-09 04:54:11.0
Elizabeth Giusti sedation is dangerous and not permitted on many airlines ... pet calmers are more effective and not dangerous. Many animals die due to sedation as it affects their heart functioning at the high altitudes where the planes fly. NO SEDATION ELSE YOU MOST PROBABLY WILL LAND UP WITH A DEAD PET!!!

Are you traveling to Nepal by air? Where is your pet traveling from?
Posted on 2013-11-18 02:39:58.0
As you are flying within the country, there is no documentation required for clearance. Air India will fly your pet with you as checked baggage. You will need a suitable crate. You should inquire to Air India as to whether your pet will need proof of rabies vaccination and/or a health certificate.

i want to take my dog a boxer from guwahati to bangalore but i am not travelling with her. please help. she is 21 months old. its urgent
Posted on 2013-12-19 10:49:13.0
Your pup needs to travel with proof of rabies vaccination administered at least 30 days prior to entry and a health certificate. If transporting by air, contact the cargo department of an airline that serves both cities. Try Air India or Jet Airways. Qatar, Ethihad and Thai Airways also serves the route but the times are longer. All have only one stop.
Posted on 2013-12-23 01:56:06.0
As you are staying in the country, there wil be no customs clearance. Contact the cargo department of an airline that serves both cities for charges and requirements. She will need a health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.

I have a saint bernard [around 60+kg] n i am shifting him from Chennai to Port blair in the first week of feb 2014.please advice.
Posted on 2014-01-01 11:52:07.0
You will need a health certificate issued by your veterinarian within 10 days of travel for the airlines. Find an airline that serves the entire trip and contact their cargo department and ask them if the airline that serves the route will accommodate your Saint Bernard. Also, ask them about crate requirements.
Posted on 2014-01-01 23:53:55.0
Try GoAir. They allow pets to travel in the cabin. Ask them if they require a health certificate for your pup.
Posted on 2014-01-01 23:57:28.0
If you want to travel with your pet in the cabin, you will need to find a carrier with the following features that will fit under the seat in front of you. It should be about 18"x18"x12" (45cm x 45cm x 30cm. It must have a waterproof bottom, ventilation, and secure fasteners (zippers, not snaps). It should have a shoulder strap which will make it easier on you to carry through the airport. If your kitty is traveling as cargo, here is a good description of crate requirements: You may need a health certificate if your pet is traveling in cargo. Ask Air India if this is required.

hi, can u help me with this. I'm frm london well i just bought 2 week old staffy puppy, so do i need to pay any additional charges? i'll be flying to india to visit my friends marriage, it's gift for her. is this possible to take with me onboard?? thank for urr help
Posted on 2014-01-07 02:43:57.0
If the airline you choose allows pets to travel in-cabin, then there will be extra charges which will vary by airline. It will be challenging to import the puppy to India. A recent amendment to their ordinance states that only people moving to India can bring a pet and the owner must accompany the pet. You can read about it here: It has gotten really complicated and you may have to use an agent. You may want to inquire at the Indian Embassy.

sir , i am in kolkata and i have a pet , i want to send it to delhi .. can i send my pet alone in the dogs carrage ??
Posted on 2014-01-09 17:40:20.0
Yes you can send your pet unaccompanied in the hold on Air India, Jet Airways or JetKonnect as long as they transport your pet's species. (not sure what kind of pet you have...) Contact any of these airlines and ask for their cargo department for details and cost. Your pet will need a health certificate issued by your veterinarian within 10 days of travel.
Posted on 2014-01-10 15:40:38.0
At the time of sending .. i will got a code number and a boarding pasd number .. ok but at next how can someone will recive the pet box ?? and where ??
Posted on 2014-01-11 17:03:42.0
You will need to contact the airine and find out where their cargo facility is located. In most cases, cargo facilities are located on airport property, but usually not in the terminal.

I have a st bernard pup of 14 weeks kindly suggest can i travel with him to goa from chandigarh. Any tips.....
Posted on 2014-01-16 10:38:21.0
Air India does permit pets to travel in the cabin as long as they travel in a secure and waterproof carrier with adequate ventilation and the carrier can fit under the seat in front of the passenger. Max weight is 5kg including the carrier. If your pup is too big, then your pup can travel on the same plane as you as checked baggage in the cargo hold in a pet crate. You need to contact the airline to make reservations for your pet. Ask them if they require a health certificate for your pet. Many airlines have age requirements of 15-18 weeks, so best to ask about that as well.

Posted on 2014-01-19 15:32:10.0
Your pet must have a rabies vaccination and Blood Titer Test to enter the UAE from India. You also need an Import Permit and a veterinary certificate. You can find details here:
Posted on 2014-01-20 16:13:57.0
Sri Lanka requires an Import Permit, proof of various vaccinations, veterinary certificate and ticks and tapeworm test. Details are here: Your puppy will need to be vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to entry. If you are looking for an agent to transport your pet to Sri Lanka, I would need to know your pet's originating country.

I have 3 Shih Tzus and 1 Tibetian Spaniel travelling with me to Toronto, Canada. Is there a quarantine time for them to follow once we land in Canada?
Posted on 2014-01-28 06:29:55.0
No quarantine should be required as long as you as the owner are traveling with your pets, they have had a rabies vaccination. The airlines will most likely require a health certificate issued within 10 days of travel.
Posted on 2014-01-29 03:27:27.0
You will need someone in India help you get an import license. Your pet must be vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to entering and a veterinary/health certificate. You can find details here:
Posted on 2014-01-29 03:30:07.0
Mara - Air India has a limit of 5kg for pets in the cabin. You can try and contact them to see if they will enforce the requirement or see if there is another airline that serves your route that would permit it.

Posted on 2014-02-03 09:00:41.0
Girish - there is a risk to live animals traveling in the cargo hold in freezing temperatures. Try to travel during the spring and fall instead of the summer or winter when temperatures are extreme. Look for a travel time when the temperature will be tolerable for your pet.
Posted on 2014-02-05 02:09:43.0
Binu - try contacting Air India to see if they will fly your puppy in the cabin with you. They have a direct flight between the two cities. Jet Airways does as well, but they do not permit pets to travel in the cabin.
Posted on 2014-02-05 02:22:54.0
PetTravel now the puppy is in chennai.. i had tried tofind out bout the transport. the airport authorities told d puppy cant be directly transported from chennai to guwahati.. i need to halt at kolkata.. is it so?
Posted on 2014-02-11 09:17:42.0
Vinnie Cheeran Air India apparently does not fly direct between these two cities. There is a route through Delhi as well. Ask the airline if your puppy needs a health certificate.

India will only permit the import of pets with owners who have or will establish residency in the country. Although Savannah cats are banned in other countries, India does not publish a ban against them. You can find details about bringing your cat to India here:

Hi Lee'p - the smaller of your two puppies seems to adfere to the airlines pet policies. You will have to check with Air India to conform that they will carry your pet on this route.
Posted on 2014-03-02 03:28:51.0
Ripon - Suni is right, Air India should carry your pet, but they have a 3 hour layover in Kolkata. Confirm with them that they will transport your pet in the cabin.

Hello Manisha - to bring a dog to Myanmar, it will need a microchip, proof of rabies vaccination at least 30 days prior to entry and a health certificate. Air India does not publish restrictions as to transporting pets on this route but you will need to contact them to confirm. You may want to check wtih Thair Airways as well as they have a route that is one stop and less than 7 hours total. Singapore Airlines also serves the route. Get your pet acclimated to its crate as soon as possible and take her out of her environment in the crate as much as possible prior to travel. Stay on the same airline for the entire flight and keep layovers under 2 hours if possible. If this is not possible, then you will need to contact the airline and convince them to hold your pet in a secure area. Sometimes, airlines will let you see your pet during the layover. The policy differs with each airline.
Posted on 2014-03-22 20:40:22.0
Raghav - Jet Airways, JetKonnect, SpiceJet and Air India serve this route. If your pet is flying unaccompanied, contact the cargo department of these airlines to find requirements and costs. Be sure and ask whether their airlines cargo doors are big enough to handle your pet's crate. You will need a health certificate issued by your vet within 10 days of travel.

Hi,I want to transport my guinea pigs from Guwahati to bangalore,is it possible?
Posted on 2014-04-06 21:50:19.0
It will need to travel in the cargo hold, Vivian. Contact an airline that flies the entire route like Jet Airways or JetKonnect and ask for details. If you are flying with your pet, then ask for reservations. If you are not flying with your pet, then ask for the cargo department.

Hi, I have a Golden Retriever dog which is about 75lbs that I would like to take it from USA to India. Few months ago I have received a email circular that said India do not allow any sort of pets. Is that true? As most of pet lovers know that they are just like a family member and how could India possibly impose such a rule. Does any have any experience taking the dog recently to India and can you please share any info? Thanks, RM
Posted on 2014-04-18 19:35:04.0
Hello Raj - you must be relocating to India to live in order to take your pet there. A NOC must be acquired in person either by yourself or an agent. You can find more details about bringing a pet to India here:
